I was wondering whats the best vid card out now for around the $600-$800 price range. I've been to a couple places and the prices vary for the same cards.

If this post is in the wrong place i trust that the mods waould take care of it.

I would imagine TT dollars. Mugsy, i would recommend looking beyond our shores for your video card needs. Most places locally dont have a good range of cards and those that do have a respectable range sell at insane prices.

Since this is not news, it should probably have gone somewhere in the hardware section.

For $600-$800 the best vid card foreign would be:

7600GS 256MB (PCI Express)
US$115.00

X1600 Pro 256MB (AGP)
US$125.00

If you are talking about locally then you're looking at a notch lower.

X550 PCI Express
TT$500

6200 AGP
TT$500

X1300
TT$700

All relatively lame options compared to the foreign ones.

Yeah dred you wont regret the extra power and performance you'll get by getting a card from outside. The only thing that can go wrong is that you get a doa card or it fails after a short time.

just try to get a card with like a 2 year warranty.. so it doesn't fail and leave you weak like my 6600gt did...
Low end and medium cards usually don't have to worry , high end cards are more prone to failure due to heat , low quality capacitors etc.

Is the 6600 GT cheaper than the 7600GS and the X1300? do they compare in terms of prices an performance. What i really want to kno is how they will be able to hold up with oblivion. My card jus buss so i wah ah new card soon. I was wondering how the 7300GS compares also.

forget the 7300GS... at least not for Oblivion

go for a 7600GS, at least...

I'd save my money and get a 7600GT

The 7600GS is cheaper than the 6600GT and their performance is comparable.

Also, the 7600 GS and 6600 GT are considerably better than the x1300.

The X1300 is more on par with the 7300 line. Real entry level cards (like the FX 5200 class)

Like Voyd said....for Oblivion, the 7600 GT / X1800 GTO is the place to be. US$190-225

If you cannot reach that high, then 7600 GS / X800 GTO / X1600 Pro (US$115-125)

Most importantly, does your motherboard support AGP or PCI-Express or both??

That will help narrow down the field considerably.

well the board is agp. so now i wondering if i should buy ah pci board in order to get ah pci express card.

on the one hand the pc i have now works perfectly fine except for a poor card and buyin ah new board jus to get ah pci card doh would be added cost which i tryin tuh aoid right now.

however i not sure spending almost 1000 tuh buy ah agp card now wil make sense if i have tuh upgrade in about 6-8 mths and still end up buying a board with pci x slots which would mean havin tuh buy another card.

AND ALL I WANT TO DO IS PLAY OBLIVION!!!!!

what do u guys recommend?

pci-e - pci-x is a server parallel based extension for bandwitch, pci-e is a serial based slot.
well oblivion IS playable on weaker cards - but you'd need to turn off some stuff with that budet.

Turn grass off, turn HDR off, maybe distant land. It ran almost as smooth as morrowind did on my 6800 when i did that.
If your cpu is weak, turn off shadows. They dont add to much really.

couple things you may want to know
1. 512MB vs 256MB makes no difference
2. the7600 gs dominates the x1600pro, so prioritize.

Use the links posted - its a mainstream performance comparison.
Nothing as low as the x600, x550 or 6600 though. But from what i've seen, it should definitely be playable with cutting down some parts. The 6800 vanilla i used ran it at 1280x1024 with the proposed setting changes.

Beo, the 7600 GS does not dominate the X1600XT

it dominates the X1600 Pro.

Mugsy, if you are on AGP, then no sense rushing into PCI-Express unless you were going for a major upgrade.

AGP still has a lot of headroom for performance if you are only looking at a TT$800.00 budget.

Unfortunately for you though, only the X1600 Pro AGP falls into your price range. Nvidia 6600GT AGP still sells for US$140-150.00, which will go over your spending limit.

Unless you go for a plain vanilla 6600 for the price range of US$100-115 (which is lame by a magnitude of about 33% compared to the GT.

If I were you, I'd spend a little extra and get the 6600 GT AGP. Should be bout TT$900-1000 landed.

It looks the litke 7600gs is after all on average more powerful than the x1600xt (multiple games), though i think this is too few games. Anyone know links to other benches? That's very awesome for a $100 card. Little apprehensive given the market brackets they currently occupy.

Saw that review from thetechreport.com today, and remembered the mistake I made in this thread. Go figure.

Not so fast beo...you neglected to mention that the 7600 GS used in that test came overclocked out of the box.

To be fair, it would need to be compared to a similarly overclocked X1600XT

everything i have i got from Amazon.com (ya, not the best price compared to Newegg.com, but than again new egg dont like non-us CC) expect the Codegen 450w powersupply and the Superpower case and the liteon 52xcd-rw
