LimeWire sued by RIAA
« on: August 05, 2006, 12:08:49 AM »
Quote
The company behind the file sharing program LimeWire was sued by the RIAA in federal court Friday, which is accusing the New York-based Lime Group LLC of facilitating the trade of illegal music files between its users. The labels are seeking damages, including $150,000 per occurrence of an illegally traded file.

RIAA claims that LimeWire's business model allows it to profit from the piracy trade, and its failure to block copyright content is a sign that the company is actively encouraging its users to pirate music. "Defendants not only have known of the infringement, but have promoted and relied upon it to build their business," it said in the complaint.

Personally, over the recent months, my impression is that the quality and quantity of limewire searches has degraded considerably. Hopefully they wont go down forever like Napster did, but as far as these things go, as one program dies, two new ones come on the scene.

I never use/used P2P apps, but I appreciate GREATLY their worth. My younger bro will not like this news but such is life (and just when we FINALLY getting DSL) ah well. As a man said for every 1 that goes down another 2 come up. We'll see who will rival the RIAA and those money hungry bastards next.

Remember when it happens, that I said it would....

At some point over the next 5 to 10 years....DRM's and the like will all go by the wayside.  As soon as a new DRM is developed, a crack of some sorts is hot on its tail.  The Entertainment industry as a whole, will EVENTUALLY embrace things along these lines and will find other ways to get your money.

Everything will be moved to an Open Environment.  The people that will make money at that point will be the ones that are set up to deal with it.  With an Open Environment for music, performers will need to rely on concert sales, and will have to adjust their pricing to suit.  With EVERYTHING available, through something akin to the p2p distribution method, there will be a need for services which canvas their usersas to their listening/viewing/gaming desires, and provide (for a fee) not only links to the p2p's, but also a "what's available" listing to their customers.  Keep in mind that hundreds of thousands of songs, books, software programs, games, etc. will be available.  The various industries will then need to take a "cut" of some sort, somehow from that cash flow (directly from the providers, not the consumers).

Think about it.  Does it even make ANY sense continualy developing security measures to keep people from getting the software/songs/etc. for free, if that method will just be broken down in under a week?  Not to me it doesn't...and EVENTUALLY it won't to the powers that be.
I'd believe u if you were right.

We can all hope for that Mr. Underwood, however as long as there is money to be made RIAA will continue to sue Grandmothers, unborn babies and homeless ppl until they are satisfied (aka until it is no longer profitable). That aside, with the rash of DRM infected hardware and hardware standards coming out (which inherently will make it harder to crack since the DRM is built into the hardware NOT only the software) it is likely that piracy will take a hit, so whilst we all can hope for free software, video, audio, etc for all... that is but a fleeting dream that should it occur we'll try to remember you said so... chances are however that won't happen in our lifetime if ever.

heh.  Wanna bet say a pack of Crixx and a half pound of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter?  =)

I agree with you regardnig the DRM hardware restrictions slowing the spread of piracy in it's current state.  I strongly suspect that the hit you predict will primarily affect the low to mid-range knowlege hackers for a period of time, but how long do you tink it will take to come out with a bridge program between the current hardware and the "hardware of the future?"  I doubt that it will take very long at all.  As for praying for free Software....nah...I'll save my prayers for something a bit more unobtainable for me....say that McLauren Mercedez on Most Wanted.  =)
I'd believe u if you were right.

hehe.  It goes back to the take one away and 3 pop up theory.  You are almost better off always picking the 2nd best in line for usage....since they will always gun for the top.
I'd believe u if you were right.

Why settle for second best wen you can use the best. Its not that its costing you extra financially. When the best is attacked and crippled, THEN switch to the second best which by that time will become the best.
