Netgear does 200Mbps over powerlines

No word on bird migrations in the area

NETGEAR LAUNCHED the first powerline Ethernet adaptor to hit the 200Mbps mark yesterday.
The HDX101 is a slick white 'wall wart' looking device that you plug Ethernet into one side, and the other into your AC supply. You plug a second unit into another outlet and you have a network.

Damnit I forgot my hug... doh study it, I go use the outlets in the house instead:



The HDX101 sells for $129.99 or a kit of two called the HDXB101 sells for $249.99. Both are based on chips from Design of Systems on Silicon (DS2), a Spanish company, so there should be variants for both the US and the EU. Both may well be available now.

The interesting thing is that this is the first commonly available powerline spec that can support HD in more than point to point fashion, so it opens the door for a lot of interesting home theatre applications.

This product, if it does what it says without a small phone book of fine print, may liberate home networking from its previous ghetto. µ

 so expensive?.. It has an advantage over normal ethernet that you don't have to lay cable , but plain ethernet IS cheaper and faster..  I'd rather Wi-Fi than this....

  What is a hope is maybe broadband over power , but power lines give too dirty a signal for it to have any real range vs DSL .. Esp with T&Tec!  broadband coming and going like mad....

i doh think the ethernet over power as a home solution is gonna succeed..   802.11n offerin same rates, and the whole wireless tech is the vogue ting nowadays..(especially as more and more laptops are being sold each year)   

perhaps if your house gives lousy wireless, and you doh wanna lay cable, then you might want it over power..



but other than that, i think wireless tech has much more of a mindshare that this ( powerline, homeplug)  and this will always be an 'also-ran'
