Game Programming starter kit 4.0
« on: November 07, 2005, 10:23:43 PM »
I've reaquired a Game Programmer kit and it has lots of complicated programming on it. Now what I want to know is: Microsoft Visual C++, it a hard program to get into? And how long would it take for me to get fully aquainted with it.

I have such cool ideas for games and it would suck to go down the toilet all because of Microsoft Visual C++
Shoot me the necessary advice

The MS Visual C++ IDE is easy enough to get into...the more pertinent question would be...how hard is it to get into C++?

How much experience do you have with C++ or any other programming language for that matter? Cos C++ ain't something you just pick up on a whim...

Besides, having cool ideas doesn't mean that you have to program them too...there are other positions to fill at game design companies...like level designer, director, concept artist etc...not everyone has to know how to produce thousands of lines of code.

Okay conceptual designs, character designs, level design I have no prob with, I even write scripts so I have no probs in terms of imagination either...but then since you mentioned the fact that I must produce "thousands of lines of code", you did quite a number on me..No I'm totally depressed..

But small thing thanks for the advice....

Are there any sites where I can get C++ Tutorials?

Let google.com be your guide young one.

After much effort you shall join us on the geek side of the force.

BTW, if you don't want to go through all the coding there are many apps that can help do the coding for you depending on what type of game you wish to make.

This site should prove helpfull.

http://www.ambrosine.com/resource.html

I have tried a few of the progs that they link to and they pretty much do what they say they will but making a game is still a lot of work.

Shots in stereo. The AIDS man cometh!

C++ Tutorials...let me see Thinking in C++ by Eckel .... SAMS Teach Yourself C++ in 24hours ...although its taking a lot longer than that for me to read the book lol....and for your game programming I've come across an ebook called Visual C++ Game Programming, but I haven't dug into that yet, still trying to teach myself C++

Having some experience with C++ it's not that hard to get into to be honest, just buy a decent C++ text (not C++ for dummies) and sit down with your compiler for a while. However having someone well versed in the language will be irresplaceble help as sometimes you'll run across compile errors you have NO idea what caused them. I would suggest however investigating C sharp as i've heard that it's where industry is turning to. I hear they're moving away from object oriented, at least in the way C++ implements it.
