What tournament system should be used
« on: May 22, 2006, 11:04:21 AM »
Hey guys,

At VxG, we're having a lil debate on what system we should use for our competition. The choice is either to use a new but lengthy system, Round Robin/Double Elimination hybrid, or just go with our old single elimination format (or doubleelimination).

Since we have a 3 -day event, it will probably be manageable for us, and our aim is to provide more playing time for the players (value for money) and also avoid "flukes".

For those of you that may be unsure of the systems:
Round Robin is where each player is placed into pools of 4. Each player in the pools play each other at least once. When everyone is done playing, the 2 players with the most wins move out of the pool into the next round. This is similar to what is done in the Soccer World Cup

In double elimination, everyone is allowed to lose twice. You play a match, and if you lose once, you are allowed to compete again.

Both are known to be lengthy formats, but both are used in combination for game tournaments since it:
* Gives the player more playing time, hence more value for money
* Eliminates random losses and “flukes”

In the past, players could have lost ONE MATCH, and that was the end of their competition, not to mention the end of their $10 or $20. Now, players will get more games for their dollar, and also have more chances at winning. In the end, you are rewarded generously for your hard work with our prizes of course.

I prefer RR-SE Hybrid. Round Robin into Single Elimination. World Cup Soccer style.

It gives competitors a fair number of games for their money and it gives the spectactors the excitement of a knock out phase.

The Single Elimination aspect also ensures you have a clear Final Match.

Double Elimination runs the risk of having an ambiguous final.

RR-SEE was also used at GigaGames 2005. Worked great.

Could the RR-SE option be added to the poll?

Since you mentioned on your forum that you are using standards set by EVO, round robin into double elimination would be best. However for most fighting game tourneys a standard double elimination bracket could work also. I ran 2 tournaments last year using the double elimination system with a 32 man bracket. Worked out nicely for everyone, plus in other major tournaments such as the ECC,Texas Showdown and Canadian events they use a barebones double elimination system.

interesting

Did not know you had experience throwing such tournaments since you stepped down from the tournament team. Been relatively quiet/absent on the scene.

Are you back into it again? Got more events coming up.

Basically I'm up for anything that benefits the players, time is a major constraint right now though. Although I plan on asking for a few saturdays off just before VXG so I can get in some gaming with humans as opposed to CPU folks. That GGXX tourney @ Nexus some time ago was also run in part by me. That used a triple elimination format which was a real pain for the finals :S

Those tourneys last year were really fun for those that participated even though they were pretty short notice. Some notable faces present at those tourneys could probably give you a good opinion on how it was organised, people like Imperial, Fault, Laertes, Bob, Red eyes, Killa, even Akuma and I think Sheppard (if thaz the guy I know as Analyst) was there. Imperial won both of the tournaments, one experiment I did was an attempt to record all the matches, which we did, but apparently the American version of 3s had some problems with the replays. As a result most of the good matches got screwed else they would have been posted.

Anyways if you need me you know how to contact me or where to find me. 9am to 6pm on weekdays.

sounds good.

Truly glad to see that the fire is still burning. I thought it was doused when you resigned from the team.

More importantly though.....Laertes any good at 3rd Strike/Tekken 5???? lol

On the note of tournaments, GigaGames just contacted us to say they have changed their event line up. Replacing Soul Calibur 3 with Tekken 5 (woohoo!!)

Poor Boxy

Those made for some cool tournaments.  Nicely run without any major hitches.  Hell, thinking on it more closely, I haven't even seen any minor problems either.  Props to rb for the events.

You think you could use what you learned from that to throw a few more? The more help/events the merrier.

There are few things in life I can look forward to.  Time is not one of them.  It's the exact reason why I didn't come to Arena last year as well so all you I can guarantee you is my sentiments for a successful event.
