Can Intel Viiv do kungfu? I think NOT, AMD LIVE for it!
« on: June 06, 2006, 09:10:28 AM »
Weird topic heading I know, but I am reffering to the man that made over the top action movies like face off and had a hand in a gaming title or two, none other than John Woo.. and where is he? in AMDs boot in old Taipai of course... I suppose intel could get the blue guys to try kung fu... but I just don't think it'd be the same.

AMD Live! beats Viiv

Computex 2006 John Woo decides it

By Charlie Demerjian in Taipei: Tuesday 06 June 2006, 09:06

THE MEDIA CENTER battle of VIIV vs. Live! is over, and Intel lost, bad. OK, both architectures appear to be DRM infected, big media co-opted slideware, but who cares. The reason AMD wins is that they had John Woo on stage, Intel can't match that. Game over.µ[

lol

hardly a "technical" reason

Both AMD Live and Intel VIIV have yet to touch me personally. Anyone out there using this stuff/plan to use it?

I dunno - i dont use a tv or vcr  - all my media is run via computer, and since college has been the center of my media word for tv or movies. It ran fine then.

here's what intel's marketing dept said about VIIV
Quote from: intel marketiots
Download your favorite movies and songs. Record live TV with optional TV tuner card and remote. Organize and share all of your photos. Or play games with competitors from around the world. With Intel® Viiv™ technology, you can do it all from the comfort of your couch—with just a push of your remote control.

let's see, torrents or itunes or allofmp3.com, ANY tvcard with a bundled package or windows MCE, Flicker imageshack and picassa, most good online games. Is it any wonder why people overlook what this really is?  A useless label given to certain pc's with certain hardware?

Take your prized collection of TV shows, movies, music, digital photos and more. Combine them with a powerful computer and your other favorite digital electronics. Add some imaginative software into the mix and be prepared for an extraordinary experience.

The AMD LIVE!™ PC Experience.
TV shows, music, digital photos - wait it's been handled well for the last 5 years, what's new now?!?
Ok, AMD IS delivering some software. But it's just a file sharing service allowing you to stream content so far and sure as hell doesnt need any new physical technology. e.g. Haimachi VPN or a linux VPN and samba

Yeah, I'm still lost.

Is this another Windows Media Center Edition type deal???

A BeyondTV setup?

Just like you, my computer has served me well as media hub in the past years. S-Video TV out is all that was required to make it welcome in the living room.

I must admit though that BeyondMedia/BeyondTV and such apps are appealing. As they give a more polished interface for the PC when hooked up to the TV. Makes reading stuff from across the room much easier and navigation a lot simpler.

They are rife with issues though. The most painful of which is that they don't support certain formats. So if you want to run the latest episode of Karas in MKV, you are SOL.

The next generation of these apps should deal with this though. Maybe AMD Live is another prime candidate.

My unix lovin cousin in canada says that MythTV is the be all and end all of HTPC software. Unfortunately, it can be a challenge to get that up and running smoothly.

Beyond is pretty much encompassed by MCE. I just use the standard leadtek software with my card. It isn't grand, but it handles scheduled recordings and playback. Not a standard gui, but not gaudy either. The coolest shit with beyond tv - Friend has a single pc with 4 tv cards. His 2 roommates connect and watch whatever they want when they want. Beyond manages the sharing of tvcards. They can have 3 of them watching tv, and one channel being recorded, other than what they're watching, and it's all a central tv-card server.

Myth has problems with compatability, but it's free. If you're cheap then that be all indeed.
