TSTT vs Columbus Communications
« on: May 30, 2006, 05:18:00 PM »
I am currently a patron of TSTT who are completely pissing me off, I saw that Columbus was coming out with their own high speed internet service.  Personally I am hoping for another war, like the Digicel vs BMobile war currently in progress, so the prices for dsl and stuff will go down, what are ur opionions on this topic.

I dont get any trouble with my dsl service from TSTT, actually instead of 256k I actually get 267k.  Either way it is not enough when u think of it in the whole, 256k just aint enough and for the price I am payin every month fking ridiculous, that is what is pissing me off with them.

Most likely he paying $400.00 a month (before VAT)... after my initial contract expire, i start to see $460 in my phone bill under dsl... (half-glad I renew with a 2-year contract + smart choice bronze ... cut the price down to $230 a month before VAT)

But I am curious. Anyone have any service/prices for Columbus yet? Or a website for them  I can look at??
God is dead.

Someone asked me a valid question regarding columbus, namely, where do they get the internet feed from? the transatlantic fibre? or a Vsat connection? maybe a wireless link to the south american continent then fibre from there? 1 has to ask, if they offering up to 3Mbps and at those VERY good rates, that the majority of users will opt for the 3Mbps. So with a LARGE install base at such speeds... that'd take a pretty sizeable pipe LEAVING T&T if yuh follow meh... If they using Vsat link/s then regardless of how fast the network (fibre if I am not mistaken) is IN T&T it won't be that great latency wise leaving the country... so p2p will suffer. If they using the transatlantic fibre.. umm TSTT owns that right? (someone verify this for me) so that would me they paying TSTT which doh make much sense at those bws. Lastly is perhaps a wireless to the continent or MAYBE a fibre to the continent that would be fine, but that is PURE speculation. So can anyone confirm or inform us on how they leaving the country with all dat bandwidth?

Lastly, just because those are the jamaican prices doh mean we'll have a direct conversion Trini, take into account the things i'v ementioned above and you'll realise we don't know what kinda cost they have to drive that kinda bandwidth here. Yuh hadda factoring any charges they have to the government (if there are any), power costs (our electricity rates will be different from JA) alot of things. Plus they will want to use their competitions pricing to their advantage. If we use the JA rates as a guide, then 180TT gives you unlimited 512kbps access. If TSTT charging 460 (monthly and NOT bound to a contract) then thy could easily charge say 500TT (without contract, with discounts for 1,2,3 yrs as TSTT) and it'd STILL be a better deal than TSTT. So don't expect those rates. Remember bottom line is they are a BUSINESS, if they can charge the same as TSTT for MORE they WILL, but seeing as they can prolly charge a little MORE than TSTT for MORE, they will MOST likely take this avenue. If TSTT bump up the speeds, they could always then drop their rates or bump their speeds up too. Keep these things in mind.

i thought that we discussed this earlier in the thread?

That columbus's parent company own the largest trans pipe in the carribean, and is how they provide these services up and down the chain of islands.

With their plan for flow, would mean that they droppin another oc or maybe a few ocs on the island
this would seem a gigantic deal to have new pipes being brought to the island, so maybe it wont be as soon as we think.

All dat you say dere crixx doh mean squat, my prior post still stands. Unless someone comes forth and says Columbus was given rights by TATT or whomever government etc to bring in that pipe we can only speculate. And i've not heard anything recently about bringing in another pipe... it could be real hush hush or maybe they have another plan, until we know for sure, I am just stating the possibilities.

wow.. you getting a WHOLE 0.2 K more than everyone else...

TSTT provides you with around 300k of bandwidth at the exchange , DSL is not 100% efficient in delivering bandwidth , so you loose about 15% due to line noise etc. bringing it down to 256k for most people.. if your line not soo badly foaked up , you can get a little more than 256...
I can't remember the exact terminology , but this is the basic concept..

If you check your modem settings , you'll see most of the time an ATU-C rate of 1024000 bits , or 1 megabit , meaning that your line can handle AT LEAST that amount of bandwidth.... TSTT holding out on us for the longest while with low bandwidth and latency, its total Sh!t .

I heard that they are using satellite for now (sucks)

but are working on getting their sub oceanic cable to the island.

When they do, things will be different.
