Yeah, Beo, nothing wrong with that.

We've been doing the same with Quake3 for years.

Intel goes boom or bust on summer collection

Roadmappery Conroe models, prices

By Theo Valich: Tuesday 30 May 2006, 13:47

ALTHOUGH THE NDA on those Conroe benchmarks expires at the very dawn of Computex, on June 4th, Conroe itself is set for launch on July 23rd.
This is the day on which Intel plans to introduce Core 2 Duo processors and slash prices across the whole range, as well as killing off a lot of old CPUs.

The desktop launch list will consist of two cores, the Conroe 4M and Conroe 2M. The first comes with four Megs of unified cache, while the latter comes with a Yonah-like two Megs.

Core 2 Duo for the mainstream market is set to go under the names 6300 and 6400. The former is clocked at 1.86GHz, while the latter is runs at 2.13GHz.

The 4MB parts are faster clocked, running at 2.40 and 2.67GHz. I don't know why, but seeing Intel in those lowly-GHz numbers after listening to hundreds of presentations in which we were encouraged to bow the the knee to the "gawd" of megahurtage make me feel a bit nostalgic. Especially since AMD is planning to intro 3.0, 3.2 and cherry-picked 3.4GHz parts.

What is the most interesting part is the fact that 1.33GHz FSB disappeared from the roadmaps, and it seems that Intel is having more problems with their FSB than they would like to admit.

Anyway, here it is, Intel Conroe summer collection at glance:

In a chiffon number: Core 2 Duo
E6300 1.86 GHz, 2MB L2, 65W, $183
E6400 2.16 GHz, 2MB L2, 65W, $224
E6600 2.39 GHz, 4MB L2, 65W, $316
E6700 2.67 GHz, 4MB L2, 65W, $530

Spangly in the extreme: Core 2 Extreme
X6800 2.93 GHz, 4MB L2, 80W, $999

If you're wondering how this line-up will compare to the AMD one, here's a joint comparison (price-wise, not performance-wise). The price of AMD CPUs is the current one, and those prices change regularly.

Battling to turn heads:
Core 2 Duo E6300 vs. Athlon 64 3500+ (single-core)
Core 2 Duo E6400 vs. Athlon 64 3800+ (single-core)
Core 2 Duo E6600 vs. Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Energy Efficient
Core 2 Duo E6700 vs. Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Energy Efficient
Core 2 X6800 vs. Athlon 64 FX-62

Don't know what you think, but my personal opinion is that AMD will have a lot of price adjustments to make in order to become competitive again. Intel theoretically sounds as an unbeatable deal right now. You can expect that "Energy Efficient" marchitecture will probably send the current AMD line-up into oblivion (or just equalise the pricing), since those CPUs right now are even more uncompetitive when it comes to pricing.

Of course, there is also a small matter when it comes to comparing Intel and AMD solutions, both financial and thermal. Since K8 motherboards are usually more affordable than Socket 775 based ones. In the high-end, price differs as much as 40-60 dollars, so we would advise you to take that into consideration. Thermal wise, unless you're reaching out for nForce 590, AMD motherboard will consume around 20 Watts less than equally equipped Intel motherboard, given the lack of NorthBridge chip. µ

AMD waits for 65nm to crank up the megahurts

Proverbial rock and a wafer

By Joshua Walrath: Friday 09 June 2006, 16:55

AMD’s AM2 launch was considered a success by those in the OEM field, as it represented AMD’s support for DDR-2 as well as reduced power consumption across the board.
Enthusiasts and others were not so impressed, however. Forums around the world resounded with calls to AMD to increase performance per clock, to provide a foil against the mighty Conroe, and to pull the rabbit out of the hat one more time. Unfortunately, AMD is hitting a pretty solid brick wall, and that wall is located at the Fab 30 and Fab 36 complex.

Oddly enough, AMD is a company that attempts to make money, which is a shocking idea to Socialists and Communists everywhere. Sometimes it even succeeds. Being able to succeed in the face of competition from Intel is actually quite impressive.

To be able to continue to make money against such a mighty foe, AMD has to focus on producing adequate quantities of processors without a large amount of waste. It can be a tricky balance, as AMD could pursue the almighty MHz with its process mix and achieve mind-numbing yields, or it could flood the market with chips at mediocre speeds with decent power consumption with incredibly high yields. These extremes are poor choices for AMD. But the bottom line for AMD and their success is simply process tech combined with a good design.

So why no improvements in IPC til 65nm? The answer to that question is transistor count and die size. AMD took its sweet time in getting AM2 out, and the engineers working on this product went through the design with a fine toothed comb.

Oh yes, they also included Pacifica (Virtualization), and a surprisingly robust DDR-2 controller with an improved Crossbar and Arbitrator. Power, Pacifica, and DDR-2 all combined made for a 20% increase in die size from the Rev. E cores to Rev. F. The dual core 512 KB L2 chips are 183 mm square, while the X2 1 MB L2 chips are a fantastical 230 mm square. Because of the way wafers are laid out, we are looking at around 25% to 30% less dies per wafer going from Rev. E parts to Rev. F. This is partially offset by Fab 36 ramping up its 90 nm process on 300 mm wafers, but it will cause a reduction in overall good dies per wafer coming from either Fab.

AMD is walking a tightrope. Not only do they have to push their dual core products in the face of Conroe, but they had to find different ways to market the product to consumers. Instead of throwing a lot more transistors at the problem and increasing IPC, all the while transitioning to DDR-2 as well as including Virtualization, AMD focused on power consumption and keeping the die sizes within “reasonable” parameters.

So what can we expect from the first 65 nm parts off the line? Probably something that few folks actually expect. Let me delve into one of the more overlooked properties of transistor design (well, at least to laymen like me). Basically the more stages in a pipeline means that the propagation delay in a signal is cut down and overall clockspeed can be increased, but more stages means that more transistors are being used. AMD is working with several partners to make sure that its 65 nm process is world class. This process encompasses embedded SiGe with dual stress liner and stress memorization technology on silicon on insulator- or e-SiGe with DSL and SMT on SOI for those so inclined. AMD and IBM have stated publicly that this technology allows for a 40% faster switching transistor than from a standard 65 nm design without all the three letter acronyms (TLA’s). In a complex design like a CPU this could mean a theoretical 50% overall clockspeed increase going from AMD’s 90 nm process to AMD/IBM’s 65 nm process all the while staying within the same power envelope.

So, for AMD’s first 65nm design, it had several choices. The first and most conservative choice would be to keep the Rev. F design essentially intact and port it to 65nm and explore the upper boundaries of clockspeed while taking a page from Intel’s Pentium 4 book.

The second choice would be similar to what NVIDIA did with the 90nm G7x series and reduce the transistor count and die size, while improving the clockspeed by a smaller amount.

The final choice would be to transition those extra transistors in those redundant stages into more useful units, and increase IPC all the while keeping clockspeed in the same general area that current 90 nm processors enjoy, all the while shrinking the die size to more manageable levels. This final choice appears to be what AMD has in mind.

This bright fellow, here, as noted earlier, has made a careful inspection of die photos and has come to the conclusion that while Rev. G will be quite similar to the current Rev. F processors, AMD will include an extra complex decoder as well as an out of order load/store buffer and out of order read/write buffer.

This design decision is not exactly a conservative move from AMD, as many were expecting just a shrink of the existing Rev. F. core. Now, these extra units in Rev. G will improve IPC on the K8, but most likely will not allow the design to overtake Conroe and its ilk in overall performance. It will certainly allow AMD to get into spitting distance, and the extra transistor switching speeds that AMD’s 65nm process promises will make for a much more compelling product than the current Rev. F/AM2 processors. Everything else looks the same though, which means the same 3 INT, 3 AGU, and most importantly the same 3 FPU/SSE units which can deliver 2 x 64 bit results per clock cycle peak. It will feature a higher IPC and be able to clock higher than the current Rev. F’s, but Intel still looks to have a pretty hefty architectural advantage with its Core 2 products.

So, while AMD had its hands tied with the 90nm Rev. F processors, it looks to be stretching its wings with its first 65nm product that is due out in December.

It will take Intel a while to fully ramp the Conroe family of products, and until then AMD will still be selling 90 nm processors at a steady rate. Once 65 nm comes, then it will have a more compelling answer to Core 2. In late Spring of 2007 we will see the first dual core K8L processors introduced, and then we will have a whole nother ballgame. µ

Well crixx if those improvements do retake the lead, then that would mean intel would have the lead all of 6 months compared to the COMPLETE AND UTTER PWNAGE intel has been suffering UNDER from AMD for about 3 yrs now. AKA since the inception of the HAMMER right up to Venice  and Denmark cores.

AMD outsold intel for several months in the states , and completely pwned them in the enthusiast market... Only thing intel still had was the support of contracters (dell)  and n00bs who bought pentium 4 pressh0ts ..  AMD was doing so good it couldn't keep processors in the shelves..
The fastest pc in my neighbourhood is my neighbours laptop... athlon 64 3400... There are more AMD pcs ( including exploded , broken down dells and 1 broken down K6) than Intel pcs in my immediate area.. So in  a way , AMD is number 1 until conroe comes out...

You forget to mention that that AMD was PWNING SO MUCH that even crixx's illustrious DELL started selling Opteron 4 ways systems :p not to mention they were selling retail AMD processors even longer and WAIT let's add to that, AMD took 20+% of the world server market with a whoping 60+% of the US server market :p But anyways here's a review of conroe which is very promising and we look forward to some stiff competition between AMD and Intel over the next year.

Intel/ATI gaming platform set to trounce AMD/Nvidia

Worms turn

By Fuad Abazovic: Tuesday 20 June 2006, 12:47

UNLESS Nvidia opens up its SLI and gives it away to mighty Intel, the big green one might lose out to its red competitor.
We hear there is a big concern going around, as Intel's 975 board and upcoming Conroe, Core Duo CPUs will work with Crossfire only.

We know that Nvidia's double Northbridge Nforce 590 for Intel is coming but, as any fule knoweth, Intel makes the best chipsets for its CPUs.

Intel's chipset will overclock well and the memory will work significantly faster than the DDR 2 800MHz specs. It will get to far more than 1066MHz and right now Nvidia's Nforce 590 SLI cannot cope with that much speed.

Of course, both Nvidia and ATI as well as VIA and SIS will have its Conroe Core duo compliant chipsets but we are still confident that no one can beat Intel at its own chipset game.

So we are still anxious to see whether Nvidia might open up its SLI and give it away to Intel or will it remain conservative about its precious SLI marchitecture? µ

intel's 965 mobos will support SLI by some driver or bios hack even if they aren't officially listed , you'll only get 2 8x or 2 x10 slots though , but still good for a budget board . ...

i can't begin to imagine how fast a quad SLI conroe system will be , the Quad sli intel systems in the past were Sh!tty thanks to bottlnecks , a dual SLI amd system could outpace it at lower, humane resolutions ( eg 1600x1200)..

I might actually consider recommending people buy Dells...

Not that Dell needs any endorsement.

They are probably the largest retailer of PCs in the world at this stage.

I know it was HP a few years back but I am sure Dell has surpassed 'em by now.

Intel aligns Conroe launch with Superman's return

Powered by Kryptonite

By Theo Valich: Tuesday 04 July 2006, 10:33

WE FINALLY MANAGED to get the date for the magic day on which all the hardware sites on the wibblesome web will come to life with official reviews and previews into the world of Intel's wonderbra chip, Conroe.
The Core 2 Duo for desktops was scheduled to launch first on July 23rd, then pushed back to July 27th, now the launch has been brought forward. The NDA expiry for the Core 2 Duo platform is set at July 14th.

While we were puzzled at first with the whole week-forward-backward-forward movement, it seems that the date has been pushed forward in order to co-relate with a European IMAX release of a 3D version of the film Superman Returns.

Our moles are telling us that IMAX theatres will start the Superman Returns movie in IMAX version with a teaser-trailer for Spider-Man 3 and an advert for Intel Core 2 Duo - the desktop version.

Whether the ad part is true or not, the NDA-signing web sites will spring into life on the 14th. µ
