yeah, the interface isn't the appeal.
To me, it is the price of the new, better performing cards on the platform.
Like I said, sell the old stuff. It is easy enough to palm off those components. If you're still running Socket A, then the upgrade is overdue anyway.
If you're on Socket 754 / 939 with AGP, then the upgrade is only a matter of swapping mobo. A $500 affair at most. Then the world's your oystser.

Unfortunately for you, only a few pci-e 478's were made, and they mainly sold in the uk
Asus p4gd1
real hard to get.
another one is the albatron 915 chipset
PX915P4C - but that's not even available on ebay.
came accross a site in
germany
and one in
new zealand
that's about it :/

What about a man like me, running a mobile xp running at 2.6ghz, gig of mem and 6800 vanilla, and runs a FPS sometimes and a racing sim here and there. Those games play nice at 1280*960 btw. Not planning to sell my system for a while yet. True PCI-E is cheaper, but i not talking about buying a new agp card, i mean completely replacing the system. Sure if i building a new system its understood that the current tech going into that, but if ure not a serious gamer, a decent older system will suit u fine.
yeah Beo none other that Chappelle, the boss himself.

you'll end up with almost the exact same setup i was running with. An overclocked xp-m + 6800 unlocked.
I posted the performance here comparing it to my 3400+ & 6800GT
http://gatt.carigamers.com/index.php/topic,5719.msg106729.html#msg106729
if you had wanted anything more like the 7800gs, i'd have said upgrade to the most basic pci-e setup - because even the sempron 2800+ oc'd to 2.2GHz beat the utter crap out of my xp-m.

Ok a couple things i can see wrong with that picture...U compared a 6800vanilla and an axp against an a64 and a 6800gt. No mind the vanilla unlocked, theres no way that it can match up to a 6800gt. 128mb DDR1 as opposed to 256mb GDDR3...PCI-E vs AGP (if applicable)
Also...what ratio did you use to achieve the 2.3 on the axp? FSB is a determining factor, all be it a small one.
I not doing any more upgrades to this system...dont make financial and technical sense. New system IMMC

i know i compared it - i was talking about how low the increase was - check the thread. They were both my own systems. Pont was that the much cheaper xp+6800ulck was keeping up nicely to the 6800gt+a64. The 2.3 was running 11.5*200, memory 1:1.
keep in mind that newer games would be less cpu dependant.

true that...i see where u were coming from. 3dmark 2k1 which is heavily cpu dependent, showed a better performance with the a64 (obviously) thatn the axp but as you so rightly pointed out, games are less and less cpu dependent. So at the end of the day, how many fps more does the increased cpu performance as represented by a thousand odd 3d2k1 points deliver? For reference, my system @ 2.6, or even 2.5 clocks 439x on 3dmark 2k5...video card unlocked and overclocked to the max (stable) of course.
The difference will be more obvious in non gaming cpu intensive apps like encoding, of which i dont do much.

let me put some context around my statement. If you own a 6800 or higher AGP card, this does not apply to you.
Tossing away an AGP mobo and going PCI-E is for people still running sub par graphics hardware. and are now looking for solid gaming performance from their PC.
Men coastin Onboard, MX 440, TI 200/500, etc.... These guys should spring for PCI-E lovin and 7600 / X1800 performance because it is just so much more bang for the buck rather than slapping in an AGP card.
If you already have a rockin' AGP gaming platform (x850, 6800, 7800), PCI-E won't bring much to the table so this statement does not apply.

x1800xt's are falling again!
$239 without rebate,
$219
if you go with one.
These price drops should force price drops on the 7900gt because currently, it's just too high compared to really consider them.
I'm gonna bet they're making room for the x1900gt which just seems like the weaker of the 2.

US$239 for 7900 GT power. That is a damn good price indeed.
I really hope it makes the other offerings fall as well. (7600 GT etc...)
