Best priced video card?
« on: April 16, 2006, 09:31:58 PM »
I just want to hear from you guys, what would you all consider to be the best performing AGP video card for under $150US... I may need to be getting one soon for under that limit, so I need some feedback.

At that price point, a 6800 Vanilla or preferably an x800GTO. The pool of decent AGP video cards are slowly drying up and are being replaced by their PCI-E counterparts. Very soon it will be difficult to find one. The takeover is happening faster than I expected.

Yea, normally I wouldn't have been looking for another AGP card, I would have held out for PCI-E...
But my current video card (9600 Pro) is dying out, artefacts are appearing all over the screen even as I type this, and my parents may be going away next month to Florida/NYC, so I was contemplating for them to get a card for between $100-$150 US...otherwise I would have to make do with a stopgap solution and go with a Radeon 9250 or something along those lines....

absolutely agree with Daaak-Neo

ATI X800 GTO 256MB AGP or Nvidia 6800 256MB AGP

Just a heads up, they are both at the extreme end of your budget. Hard core searching online will find them straddling the US$150.00 mark.

Will not be easy to find these cards for sale at the price point if your folks are walking into a typical retail store.

Going for 128mb versions will make it fit into the budget easily but then expect performance issues with the latest crop of games. (oblivion, battlefield 2, etc..)

Pity you weren't on PCI-Express. There you'd have an easy time finding similar performing cards for the money.

Yeah boy Daaak, I wasn't expecting PCI-E to take over the scene so quickly myself, given the fact that the performance gains at current hardware level is negligible.

The only reason PCI-E has become so prevalent is because nVidia and ATI has pushed it that way...they have literally switched over to PCI-E, and now it's almost a novelty when they release an AGP version of a card! I mean...just check out the thread about the 7800GS AGP card (http://gatt.carigamers.com/index.php/topic,7528.0.html) and you'll see what I mean...mankind almost jumpin for joy now when an AGP card is released...so it's not so much that people have gone out and bought PCI-E boards because of the possible gains and the upgrade paths etc, but because, quite frankly, if they didn't, they'd be stuck with fewer, more expensive, options on AGP.

Well anyone has any idea if there's any way to possibly fix this problem I'm having with my video card?

Across the screen there are random lines (pink/green mostly), that randomly change when the screen is refreshed. The lines only show when Windows loads up, not while Windows itself is loading....

Any other details, just ask, I'll see how well I can give them.

well said czar.

btw, you must mean the 7800 GS AGP? Last I checked there was no 7600 GS AGP.

but yeah, the best cards are on PCI-E and for cheap and probably for no other reason than Nvidia and ATI "said so"

They must have a grand plan for the platform since both parties are pushing it down our throats.

I've since changed out all HQ machines, save one, to PCI-Express as a result.

Wish I could help boy SPK but once our Video Cards to the Artifact Fandango, they go straight into the rubbish heap.

Eventually there will not even be any new AGP bpards being manufactured if they are even still made at all. As recently as the beginning of the year, AGP cards were fairly easy to find locally, but lately, I find it has been increadingly hard to find them at any of my favourite local retailers.

I say yuh could try a 6600 GT.  Used one myself until recently, and its performance was pretty amazing to say the least.  An eVGA 6600 GT can be had on Amazon for $130 US.

Check it here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009JDYAU/sr=8-1/qid=1145336007/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-5403179-8834304?%5Fencoding=UTF8

THe 7800GS whilst a good card that brings SM3 to the AGP platform as well as HDR and a few other things isn't really worth the money considering the performance is barely above that of a X800XT or 6800GT, we'll not even mention X850XT PE. But to be honest if you're gonna go for that kinda performance (baring you don't already have it like myself) then i'd advise you to save up and buy a PCIe mobo. Also the 7800GS would not perform well on anything but a A64 or comparative Intel platform. So 754 in the least on the AMD front. I'd suggest P4 3.2 GHz and higher on the intel side.

I've seen some bench sites claim that Nvidia performs better on flight sims and rpg's whereas ATI is better for FPS etc. I dont believe that to be totally true. Some developers optomise their games for specific brands eg. Half Life 2 was optomised for ATI and Quake 4 is known to run better on Nvidia gpu's. So.....i dont think that anyone can safely say that x type of games are better on x brand video card. You need to look at your video card budget, look at all the possibilities for the budget and compare them using online benchmarks. They bench a variety of games so you can choose your favourite type of games and see which card those perform better on. Also, if you in the market for a new video card, perhaps it will be wise to wait until the next gen cards come out around Q3 this year.

what chip are you on?
if you are on 754, 939 or 775, it's probably better to upgrade to pci-e and get a cheaper faster pci-e card.

e.g. x800 on pci-e $80
x800 on agp well, just plain tooo much.

7800gs on agp - $264
7600gt on pci-e (about the same speed) - $164
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?

I'd strongly recommend selling off your agp/socket A parts and getting at least PCI-E socket 754 if not PCI-E Socket 939

After seeing this review, it begs to ask, why would anyone buy a 7900GT when you can get an X1800XT for the same price... have a look at these benchies (note I use 1280xX res as I believe this best represents the resolution any gamer with such caiblre cards would use):
