Tom's Charts are Updated....
« on: August 21, 2006, 04:22:44 PM »
Even though they updated it 4 months ago, due to some big changes in current processors, Tom's has updated their CPU charts.  According to their benchies, AMD's no longer the dominant power, having been replaced by  Intel's Core 2 Duo. According to their charts, the Core 2 Duo processors are faster than Athlon 64 X2's and they consume less power.

Charts and full story are here:

Dude, i'd swear you living under a rock or something for the last 3 Months. Who on GATT DOESN'T know Core 2 Duo owns?? Granted tha Tom's hardware update thier charts is nice and all, but that is very minor.

just search for conroe or core 2 duo on the forum..  I too lazy to show you the respective threads myself

You ent see HOW MANY TIMES Crixx rant about conroe (aka Core 2 Duo)?....  he only stop becasue i threaten to use mangekyou sharingan on HIM. (and not just ANY version.. Kakashi's version!!)
God is dead.

What I think he's referring to is their new comparison chart, which looks at price/performance ratios for 83 different CPUs, while also comparing all the benchmarks.  Core 2 Duo CPUs aren't for everyone yuh know(yes Crixx, is YOU ah talkin to lol  ).  His intentions are good, so dont bash, yet.

You can see for yourself here:  http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/08/21/cpu_charts_summer_2006/

Very useful information here for users who may not understand what all the Core 2 Duo hoopla is all about.  I used these charts to compare the Athlon X2 3800 (which I will be upgrading to before the year is out) with the Core 2 Duo 6400, and based on what I'm seeing, the difference aint all that great.  Certainly, not great enough to justify the purchase of a new mobo, RAM, and CPU.  Oh, and the X2 3800 is $163 US.

Nuff said.

INDEED!

That aside, it's an interesting comparison the power consumption issue. Conroe is GREAT, not if and or but about that. However to do the performance per watt ratio correctly you really need to see past the BS that BOTH manufacturers spew. To begin with, you can't take EITHER of their words for granted as they both phrase it such that they sound better than the other and thats to be expected.
Let me bring to light exactly what I mean.
Intels' TDP (Thermal design power)  by DEFINITION ALONE is different from AMD's. Intel uses 80% of the theoretical maximum power dissipation or something to that effect, whereas AMD uses the absolute maximum. So when you see an AMD processor with a TDP or 'thermal envelope' of 85W, that's an indication of 85W MAX, whereas Intels' TDP is more like the power dissipated running constanty at 80% of the max. You need to read between the lines to really compare. Overall Intel right now wins in power consumption on the PC front and there is mix bag of results with the mobile dept.

This was primarily Intel dominate, however th Turion X2s are actually a give and take vs. the core architecture. Eg. The Core Duo processor uses slightly less power under use, but the turion does better in the sleep and deep sleep states (S3 and S4 I believe), Turions do better power wise under normal usage, but INtel does better under heavy loads. So you can see right there, different levels of use will result in different payoffs for ppl.

I think this chart is good as you can get an overall view of things, so ppl doh beat de man down for having the best intentions to everyone in mind. There could be a man who eh on de forum or tech scene for a while and this will make his life ALOT easier. That aside i'd just like to point out that the Opteron platform when compared to woodcrest is pretty competitive as the overall intel platform can be more power hungry with the necessity of FB-DIMMS... but i'll not get into that bag.
