Round 2 Nvidia:
Quote
Nvidia's Geforce 7900 GT beats X1800XT

Overclocking faster at the same price

By Fuad Abazovic: Tuesday 28 March 2006, 14:42

OUR first lab tests show that the $300 priced 7900 GT actually can beat X1800XT. This comes as a huge surprise, as just a few months ago X1800XT was the fastest card that ATI had to offer.
If Nvidia's card doesn’t comes faster it is very close to ATI's X1800 XT card that ATI wants to market as the competition to this card. We are talking about the default clock of 450MHz core and 1320MHz memory. Nvidia is not just faster - it has a few more key advantages up at its sleeves. Its chip is significantly smaller and cheaper to produce and it can be highly overclocked. It also runs much cooler and the fan is quiet. This card sure points to the end of R520, Fudo chip.

Even if Geforce 7800 GT loses over X1800 XT 256 MB, a lot of manufacturers will offer overclocked versions. EVGA is one of them and EVGA clocks its e-GeForce 7900 GT CO SUPERCLOCKED card to 550MHz core and 1580MHz memory. This card sure kicks ATI's butt, big time.

ATI's chip is expensive, big and it can be beaten by Nvidia's 90 nanometre 24 pipelines answer.

Companies such as EVGA, Gainward, XFX or BFG are shipping the cards at much higher clocks. It seams to me that Nvidia won this round, at least in sub $299 high end. Nvidia does have a problem shipping its highest end GTX cards but it might just overcome that problem.

I say round 2 because imho the 68xx series was round 1.

7900GT is a damn sweet card, faster than a 7800gtx by a little bit.. i hoping this will drop to 200 ish in 6-8months like the 6800 did , or they release a DX10 card with a similar speed for 200 us ( geforce 8600?)  .
Plus if you get a model with a good heatsink you can be lucky enough to hit 7900 GTX core clock speeds .

All those articles saying that the 7900gt is prices at $300 yet the cheapest i ever saw one was for $319 on Newegg. Small ting. it is indeed a sweet card...if u can find a store with one in stock.

they're usually overclocked though which is awesome.

32bit would last you a gooood long time. Vista may be 64 bit - which i doubt as they'd lose a huge base of customers without a 32 bit version, but even if it is, if the drm is too bad, i'd stick with xp for games :P
:P random text doesn't go out of date does it?

Yeah there's gonna be a 32Bit version for sure. Microsoft aint that crazy to release a 64bit version alone.
