Microsoft enters the handheld fray with ''Origami''
« on: February 27, 2006, 02:07:18 PM »
Microsoft is poised and ready to compete with the  Ipod ,PSP and DS with its high end '' origami'' hand held device, Basically i believe it to be a handheld Xbox with a mini hard drive or flash storage... It runs windows so likely you may be able to run some windows games and programs.... Running windows also means it will probably be easier to pirate games on it than the other platforms . Also you would be able to load up all the windows codecs you need for your media.. DivX , Matroxka , Xvidetc.
Interface looks  clunky for gaming and the device will likely be expensive.. we will see how it fares.... Considering that it might have USB plug and play support ... you could just plug in your gamepad and be happy .

Official unveiling is on march 3rd .

I think we're all looking at this from the wrong angle...it's not like the primary target audience is gamers...cos from the looks of it, and what I've read...it's a mobile PC + GPS + etc that also has gaming capacity...not a gaming device that has the other things...but who knows...maybe I'm wrong...we'll know for sure in 3 days or so...

All we know for sure at this point is that Microsoft is getting good at guerilla marketing. I mean we all just saw some stupid videos. We don't know anything about it.

I think that this device  is really nothing more than a portable monitor for home computing.  you have your main  pc at a central location and you lug this around the house and access stuff on it,  say you are on the front porch and an email  comes in you read it there, if you are at the pool you could  play some tunes.  or edit some docs while sipping  a drink.  the gaming thing  was just to  get  gamers interested when they might not have been, notice  they picked halo to display

More money for MS is the way I see it with this device. But then there are alot of things they make that just didn't take off the way they wished it to. Like WinXP cut down in Europe (ok this one was a EU thing but still) Media center ed... I think thats a waste of time... there are other things that sucked but I just not idle enough to bring it up. Personally MS can stick that up their ...... as far as I concerned.. I doh even have an iPod I go buy this?

That's a pretty unfair comparison win...it's not meant to be the MS version of the iPod...but i get your meaning all the same...

Looking at the pics it really seems like just a smaller tablet pc. Something like that needs to have perfect human interface to work. I think it'll have a few applications but I doubt it'll replace a laptop anytime soon. Having it be a full fledged PC for that matter seems a bit much as well. The only obvious app that will work well with it is web browsing while in transit, as according to this(http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4789496.stm) it supports cell data networks, and a pc running winxp tablet edition is too much for just web browsing. I'm better off getting Nokia's internet tablet running Linux or whatever future version of that that will support cell data services. In general though I think the idea of trying to sell yet another form factor is the problem. This will only confuse management of your data more when you have some stuff on one device and other stuff on another device. There needs to be a better paradigm for access and control of our data over all our devices. Web services helps with the access but it doesn't give you the same level of control.

We need to go back to the mainframe model where everything was on one machine. ^_^

It is an interesting form factor.

This device can be truly useful in a great many ways. Terminal services will bring your desktop to you with this device anywhere that their is an internet connection.

Unlike so many other mobile computers, this will run all of your native apps and files.

Not a "Pocket Version".

Think of it in a Car.  Connected wirelessly to the car deck, running winamp/movies/etc...

Or like QZAR said earlier, moving around with it at home as a portable console. Docked by the kitchen/living room, connected to the home audio system via wireless.

Definitely better for watching movies/anime than the ipod video.  No more converting your videos to quicktime or such. All codecs will work. All players will work.

If this thing is cheap, say US$200 cheap...it will be a kick ass addition to your wireless network or road warrior arsenal.

If it is a US$999.00 machine, then it will sit on the shelf and be only used in hospitals/military and lotto winners. lol

Ouch. US$600 - $900 is just way too much for my tastes.

You can get a decent laptop for that sort of money.

but it's a start. If the form factor gains popularity, we may see cheap versions in a couple years.

I think $300 is the most  I would personally spend for such a "consumer" device to toss around the home/car.

FIAH BUN... I should add this item to the FIAH BUN LIST... in fact I think I will. That aside, I think that I would quicker support the AMD/Linux initiative to make the 100USD PC for 3rd world countries (if you've never heard of this project, what rock have you been living under, scour the forum you'll find it somewhere). They could chop a good 50-100USD off that 'ultra portable' device by replacing the OS with some Open source goodness. But that's just me. Yet another useless device I WON'T be buying.

I don't think it'll take a couple of years, look at laptops they've been around for YEARS and we only now seeing laptops maturing to the point of commodity pricing. Without a mass market application, it'll take the tablet stuff just as long to do the same, especially since they're selling so many form-factors now. And it'll take apple-level perfection in human interface and integration in cellphone data access to sell it.
