lol @ stupid.

Come on Crixx. You know MS wtfpwns us as the gaming platform of the PC.

Not Unix, Not Mac, but Microsoft Windows.

And before windows? Microsoft DOS was the gaming platform of choice.

Thinking of gaming on a PC? Think Microsoft.

If they say Vista for gaming  in 2006/7 then who are we to slow their roll?

Wanna go back to running Duke Nukem and Doom in DOS? Hells...no.

Forward ever, backward never.

Think of it this way, the more people moving to VISTA = the more game worthy PCs in the world. Just to run some of the fancy VISTA GUI stuff you need directx9 hardware. 512MB ram and up will be status quo.

Nah man.  XP doin de ting jus fine for now.  Did you note the system requirements for Vista?  They kinda hefty for right now.  Anybody who upgradin will need to spend at LEAST $3000.00, an that is just for probably 3 components (mobo, CPU and GPU).
Once M$ doh force the issue and f@#k we up, we good.

fyah bun Vista!!! (for now at least)

I read somewhere that the specs alone may not realistically allow Vista to run.(http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1925173,00.asp) I'm sure you can turn Aero off, but then what would have been the point of upgrading in the first place? me still a *nix noob but I'm getting more into it so no chance of dropping cash for vista.

Arcman, the same could be said for XP over Windows 98.

The requirements to run XP smoothly were much higher than for Windows 98.

Look around you now, how many gamers running Win98 in GATT??

Care to take a poll?

hmm.. vista doesn't bring THAT much to the table ( 'cept the replacement to direct x)

unlike 95 ( promises of less crashes than 3.1, new interface) , 98 (integration with IE, various security stability updates), 2000 (plug and play suport, stability )  and XP ( merging of 98 and NT codebase, security, stability)

for the time being, wahever security updates out for vista will be available for XP ( and i see this for good few years.. )

while games will most benefit from the new graphics subsystem, those that fully harness the power of it will take at LEAST a two years to come out ( factors like the development cycle of a new game, and the learning curve of a new API.. kinda like the first gen of games on a new console)

it's just not that pressing to update to vista...

Microsoft has neither evolutionized nor revolutionized the OS market with its upcoming OS, Vista. Don't get me wrong, I'm a loyal supporter of everything MS, I'm even using the Tablet PC edition of Windows (which is pretty cool), but I can't buy into the hype of Vista. I'm already running windows xp and xp 64 on a decent machine (AMD Athlon 64 bit processor inside) and it works, for the most part. I've also used OS X and I'm running SUSE 9.2, which I'd trade Windows for anyday. If you're smart, you'll wait around and see how the initial generation of adopters of the OS get by and if not, well I guess you better get that format c:\ /s ready.

True dat, but I myself have upgraded PCs that were runnin Win 98 to XP, and while it ran somewhat slowly, it did run quite well.  The only change that was needed was more RAM, and a bigger hard-drive.  In this case however, the hardware upgrade path is much more expensive.  While I agree that 'Microsoft wtfpwnz j00!!!', I think it would be best to wait at least a year and a half (or until it ABSOLUTELY necessary) before that kinda upgrade.

That said, it have plenty men who WILL spend what I think is unnecessary money to upgrade just to play Halo 2.

you need to check your time lime.

A lil more ram and a bigger HD 3 years ago will cost about the same as a Vista upgrade today.

3 years ago, going from 64MB RAM, 10GB HD to 256MB RAM, 40GB HD

is equivalent today of going from 256MB RAM, 40GB HD to 512MB DDR, 160GB HD.

RAM and Hard Drives cheap nowadays. REAL Cheap.

Men talking about 250GB hard drives for under US$100.00 in another thread.

Think about it from that angle.

but u don't need to upgrade much to run Vista it'll run on any halfway decent machine these days...the only real reason to delay upgradin is to see how it functions...wait for a service pack or 2 and then dive in while sellin another bit of ur soul to Bill

Nah I'll at least need to add in another stick of 512 ram. Possibly 3. And probably the "fancy hybrid hard drive"s too. And even though ATI says the card can handle it, I feel they lie.

All that for halo? :(

One way or another I not going to switch until well after they bash most of the kinks out. ME was a hell of a learning experience and I would like to continue to be able to boot a computer and not watch it crash every time I move in the chair.

Did I mention that I'm a man who used to run sims on 40 meg of ram my the old computer. (Doh ask how I end up with 40 meg you doh want to know. Just accept that it ran... Or at least walked slowly... Most of the time.)

Why should I have to bloody upgrade anything for Vista? You realise it's just transperant windows that you're getting right? That's basically what it all boils down to. It would be that and a much nicer file system but that's now gonna be a separate download.

From another post i'd say Baego is looking forward to Vista for monitary reasons (as he stated) but I don't think its quite the comparison of 95/98-2000 in terms of requirements. From the different things i've been reading, Vista is supposed to be LOADED with the secure digital platform technology (like Viiv) as far as I know, to run vista you need more power (so A64 and up), new monitor to watch secure video (check up Blu-ray and HD-DVD) those will both need special monitors and special video cards to watch. Then there will be greater memory requirements and I am sure they'll strive to eliminate piracy (which is not a bad thing) with more rigid activation/registration elements. Ppl will be using XP for quite some time, a pretty face is hardly the carrot to lead you away from a tried and tested platform that doesn't need expensive upgrades to work. Plus how many game developers are working on games for Vista righ tnow anyways? ur arguement of improvements in games is a bit null till games start coming out. Sure DX10 or whatever they're calling it lately will add some more eye candy, but games were doing that on XP as it is... so Vista is nothing special and is they way I see it jsut another way for Sir William Gates III to get more returns on his stock options :p
