Arima man fined for stealing net access
« on: February 07, 2006, 07:00:19 AM »
Quote
A 24-year-old computer technician of Arima was yesterday fined $10,000 by an Arima magistrate after pleading guilty to unlawfully accessing and using someone else's Internet account.

In default, he will serve 18 months in prison.

Rajiv Mikhoo is the first person in Trinidad and Tobago to be convicted of an offence under the Computer Misuse Act 86 of 2000.

guys be careful when yuh 'borrow' a pword eh..doh abuse it..

link fixed ( thanks gambitt)

well, i suppose the computer misuse act 86 of 2000 that they quoted makes it possible now..
i don't doubt that it always has been logged..  'tracing the call' makes it sound more complicated than it really is.. . which is just lookin at the log to see what number dialled in an provided whatever password

just speculation on my part..

Link's gone bad...

A man was shot dead in Carenage on Sunday night.

Sadiq Abdullah Mohammed, 26, was found dead in a yard at Rodney Street, Carenage around 9 p.m., after loud explosions were heard in the area.

Anyone have more details about this case?

How exactly was he caught, because although I know better, TSTT used to claim that they didnt trace back calls coming in to them. They used to say it was against the law. But we won't say anything about old machines that just sit and printed out page after page after page of telephone numbers and usernames when you dialed up. If that's changed I'd like to know about it.

i would think that if a customer calls complaining about being charged 4 time dat she eh know noting about TSTT would do an investigation to see if she dialed-up from her line which dey would have d right 2 do...and with dat they can tell what number has been dialing up

As I said, they have for years been refusing to perform lookups on demand. They claimed that this was "against the law" regardless of what the machine sitting in the exchange was doing 24/7. And I made more than one demand when I was sitting online looking at someone trying to use scripts to kick me off the net. I spoke to several supervisors and it was only after the threat of imminent physical violence, and a class action law suit against TSTT that the silly buggers figured they should get off their collective asses and see if they could figure out what I was saying.

The trick was that the supervisor thought that the disclaimer of liability in their contract agreement would protect them all. That is a mistake on several grounds, 1 they can't apply such a disclaimer realistically, 2 the little pr|ck probably never signed such an agreement anyway and 3 that wouldnt have been what I was suing for anyway, I pointed out that a person could probably sue TSTT for negligence and complacency in allowing the "hackers" to continue their actions after it had been pointed out to them. Winning on any of those grounds is questionable at best, but with a good lawyer, it sure would give them a good run for their money.

So I'd still like to know how they figured it out.

Apparently it quite easy to figure out.  I was by mih GF one night tryin to logon via dialup with my laptop (DSL was on at home same time).  However I keep getting 'access denied' whenever I attempt to logon.  So I called TSTT internet help desk and told them somebody was probably logged on with my account.  The lady on the other end confirmed this, and stated that the person logged on had dialled in from DIEGO MARTIN!!!  I'm from Arima, and my GF lives in Chaguanas, so, needless to say I was VERY surprised to hear that.  After she confirmed my identity, the offender was booted off the network and I was able to logon right thereafter.

Of course I change the password ONE TIME!!!  It shows however, that they could actually find out who usin yuh account (at least the person phone number) if it get hijacked.  I tried to find out the person phone number, but she would not give me the number.  So if the guy was consistently usin the woman account from the same number, it would have been quite easy to track him down.

Kudos to whoever from TSTT help to get tha man.  Is over $4000.00 he cost the lady.

Of course they can. You could do that if you had caller ID enabled and someone was calling in to you, so for the only telecom provider it's more than possible to give not only a telephone number, but a street address. As I said they keep track of the incoming numbers (on hardcopy no less), or at least used to, regardless of their official position.

But to my knowledge it has been their repeatedly stated position that they would not check back the telephone number as it's "against the law" for them to do so.
