Star Wars: Empire at War demo out today
« on: January 18, 2006, 09:59:28 AM »
Now, I don't usually talk or get excited about demos...cos I hardly ever download them...but I'm sure to be grabbing this one when it's available in a few hours :)

Finally a Star Wars RTS that looks worthy of the Force....it's designed by Petroglyph...a bunch of old Westwood guys...aka the guiys that made Command & Conquer...and from the trailers on gamespot's site...it's looking to be shaping up nicely :)

It's not your typical RTS...that's for sure...the dynamics of the Galactic conquest change things up quite a bit...there's more to do at a higher level...it's quite intriguing. I've only run through the tutorial missions so far, but I can already tell that I'm going to have some fun with this one :)

INteresting that it has a ABSOLUTE requirement of dx9c

that could leave a sour taste in some peoples mouths.

Like when texture an lighting was introduced as an absolute in games, such as the first spiderman game for pc, and cards without T&L were suffering.

But yes

must get game

giveth link czar!

very sweet game  , only thing i can fault it for is the simplistic space combat...  where has all the homeworld gone? It could have been much more tactical than it is currantly by adding full 3 dimensional movement etc.  Though as it stands its very addictive . .
One more thing...  i'd like to see the ability to do a ''hit and run'' attack on enemy bases , supposedly the rebels lacked the  military power early on to stand off the empire with conventional tactics, so they had to resort to guerilla tactics i.e. send in some fighters and bombers... knock out a star destroyer or two... and escape quickly before you can be seriously damaged , thus you can soften up targets without exposing your fleet .
The only way i see that possible in the demo thus far is to ''loose'' the battle and attack again later on.. hopefully the demo is alot more restricting than the full game ..
Once the full version  has good enemy AI and a long ,challenging campaign, it will rock .

I just read through the GameSpot review...they gave it an 8.7...and they say that any strategy fan should take a look, especially those that enjoy Star Wars...

Nah, if he spices it up with pics of semi-naked girls around the game booth from E3 and has a few of some hot chick sitting in front fo the computer looking like if she is playing the reviews will probably rock.

I'm actually looking forward to hearing what he has to say about the games. Pro reviewers sometimes give a game real nice ratings and the game sucks in my opinion, of it gives me loads of probs that they never mentioned.

episode 3 had good enough fighting  , but it could have been BETTER .. and the acting just plain sucked , as it stands the people in KOTOR 1 or 2 did a much better job than george lucas .

Game is nice but not as strategic as i like it, reminds me alot more of Battle for middle earth and Star Trek Armada than anything else , fun gameplay but not in depth . May make for good LAN games .

Your reviews have to be as unbiased as you can make it. use "I" as little as possible and use "the game" as little as possible.....always use the title

I see what you mean Laertes.

TrinithereturnofGamez, that sort of review tells me you are on crack!

KOTOR 1 & 2  did not blow episode 3 away, it blew episodes 1, 2 and 3 away! (Ok so Kotor 1 alone blew all of them away and kotor 2 wasn't quite as good and it was too short, but it still did much blowing away.)

Laertes doh get me wrong eh, I not saying that his reviews will match what other critics say. I just saying that sometimes a movie or game may "buss" or just plain be overlooked because someone may have been expecting something else from it.

Take the old Dune 1970's movie. In my mind that is a crapload better than the sci-fi miniseries remake, because it's a better told story, even if it deviates from the book. Course it have people who are willing to try to take my head off for saying that and the critics tend to agree with them.

So even if his review does suck, I doh mind listening to it and then coming back and telling him I find he was talking out his backside when I have played the game and maybe we could even sit down and discuss why.

1970's?
I didnt knwo they had one....i know of the 1984 release with Sting and company...which i thought was complete @ss.

loved the miniseries....llove when they take a sci fi movie and make science fiction secondary. They did that in the DUNE MINISERIES.

KoTOR 1 was a fabulous storyline.....it rivaled that of the ORIGINAL star wars storyline with a FANTASTIC world to explore. KOTOR 2.......to me it upped and disappered like a fart in the wind.....i played it........and never cared to finish it...the story was not as compelling.
