Intel is ready to start unleashing its big play on AMD , 65nm multicores with Pentium M based core logic , Anandtech got a look at the Yonah , a dual core pentium M for laptops , if this is any indication as to how Intel will perform next year , AMD might have reason to be afraid .
While it does no beat the A64 X2 , all intel has to do is clock the chips around 2.8ghz for the desktop version and AMD may have a problem , since the work done per clock is almost the same between the A64 and Yonah , but lookin at AMD roadmaps we should see 3ghz + Athons in 2006 which may give amd the edge ,
plus the round of AMD chips support dual channel DDR II and built in PCI-X controllers , which should give them at least 10% more performance per clock ,
if anyone remembers the transition to Venice from winchester cores , the Venice brought 5% more performance through memory controller tweaks alone , so 10 % or performance per clock on a major revamp by AMD is logical .
Also if you were paying attention recently , AMD is phasing out its 2ghz and 1.8ghz desktop chips , which may mean the slowest cpus we see from now on will be 2.2ghz .
Only bad thing about intel moving to pentium M technology is that it offers worse performance in encoding...
