Mid range performance , 6800 and 7800 GS
« on: November 23, 2005, 08:22:26 PM »
Nvidia released new cards in the 200-350 USD bracket   , a 12 pipe 6800 GS and a 16 pipe 7800 Gs.   The 6800 GS is roughly equivilant to the 6800 GT in performance ,  the 7800 GS  a little better than a 6800 ultra .
The 7800 GS should be a peak at what the 7600 GT/GS should perform like next year for a lower price ,  whether it has 16 pipes or 12 pipes and a higher clock eg. 500mhz .

While I've been eye balling the 6800GS since I read it's first review online, I really haven't heard about the 7800 GS

In fact the writer goes on to say that the card is a sort of a demo tech... hardly will be released (depending on how new chips perform)

So right now, for those who can't afford the 7 series from nvidia, the 6800 GS is an excellent alternative. Easily overclocked (it can match a "stock" 6800 GT or Ultra) and the price is pretty resonable (should drop below US$200 by Christmas or New Years for the latest)

so it is significantly cheaper? is that the benefit?

As opposed to raw performance.

The 6800GS is meant to replace the 6800GT and Ultra derivatives...the performance is there, as well as the price...

The 7800GS as Voyd rightfully mentioned is not yet released...but if the article on AnandTech is any indication of what to expect, nVidia may have a sugar card for the price/performance sweet spot...it falls between the 6800GS and the 7800GT in terms of performance and hopefully price if/when it's released...and it competes well with the higher priced ATI X1800XL card...

nVidia hittin ATI with a serious broadside oui...every which way they turn...

Nvidia is impressing me ALOT more than i expected ,the Geforce 7 architecture is very impressive , 7800GTX 512mb reaching 600mhz + on good air cooling on a 110nm process  ,  almost as good as ATI on the 90nm process .  Likely the next set of Nvidia cards for 2006 will be as follows :
    A 32 pipe uber card (7800 ultra? 7900 ? ) with  30%-50%  more performance than the 7800gtx
a cheaper 24 pipe card ( 7800 XT) with  7800 GTX performance at lower price
16 and 12 pipe budget cards  (7600 GT?)  with performance like a 6800gt
      8 pipe card ( 7200)  with performance like a 6600 gt
ATi would try to counter with chips made on an 80nm process that shouldn't have  the problems they are having on 90nm  :
    24-32 pipe uber cards R580 ( x1900 XT?)
    16 pipe budget  cards    RV560 (X1700XT)
The ATI architecture is decent but they are having lots of manufacturing issues and can't put out the number of pipelines and TMU's needed to compete with Nvidia. Hopefully next year will be a bit more even fight for ATI , we can't afford to loose them else we'll be back in the days of 3dFX..

It's sorta both... got the performance and the price is just about right.

Joe Public can afford this card which doesn't do too bad at all in many of today's games

John Geek can overclock this card really easily on stock cooling and have a card that's just shy of 7 series and on par with 6800 GT or Ultra

But some are waiting on the cheap 7 series (7200, 7600) cards to be released in lieu of buying a 6 series (read old tech) GPU
Time and budget constraints may place me in the latter group
