Did sony miscalculate
« on: November 18, 2005, 11:13:31 AM »
Lets face it, the PSP isnt flying off the shelves like your friendly neighbourhooh sony exec thought they would. Its so bad that the fourth version (if you count the gamecube advance) of the gameboy advance (the micro) is presently outselling the PSP in japan.

Will the PSP end up being the gamegear of our time? I mean how many of us have time to watch a movie while on a taxi to work, when you break it down the psp will end up being a high priced portable movie player if the present trend continues. And with an unburnable disk format death wont be far off.

Wait, hold up....what makes you think that the PSP isnt making sales? PSP sold over 185,000 in the first for days in UK alone while the DS sold 87,000 in its whole launch week...what does that say?

And you saying that YOU may not have time to watch a movie in a taxi to and from work, you may not, but people living in big countries where just traveling to work is a hour or two, why cant they use it there? And who says you have to use the media just for that, if I had a psp, every thursday I walking arround with the new episode of bleach in my pocket!

I'm sorry, but that makes no sense for the PSP to fail, and what backs it up even more so is the compatability with the PS3, even though this is not confirmed but hinted at this would be a major thing for the PSP.

PSP isnt failing.......yet. However Gamestop is getting a pretty high stock of used PSP's for sale, and DS's are on pre-order again.

To add to your sales notice. When Nintendog's was released over 90 THOUSAND DS consoles were sold in that week. Actually the number of DS systems sold that week exceeded the sales of XBOX, PS2, PSP and GBA ALL COMBINED. what does THAT say.

Taken from Gamasutra.com

Japanese sales chart ending October 30th

The Nintendo DS continues to lead Japanese hardware sales, with a 39.62 percent market share and 46,826 unit sales. The PSP is in second place again, though, with a 23.56 percent market share and 27,837 units sold, followed by the PlayStation 2 with an 18.60 percent share and 21,976 sales. With no significant new software release sales, the Game Boy Advance family of consoles slipped even more significantly this week, to just 15.64 percent of the overall market (Game Boy Micro: 11,656, Game Boy Advance SP: 6,515, Game Boy Advance: 321). GameCube market share was at 2.48 percent and Xbox at 0.10 percent.

However its nice to see the PSP outseling the PS2. But then Japan does have the "cooler" games that never come to the US :( Actually if i dont get an XBOX 360 i might see myself getting a PSP.

I think this is just the industry learning that just because its the most advanced platform does not necessarily make it the best unfortunately. That seems to be the number 2 priority and the number 1 is a value add that usually varies from system to system. Usually though it's the variety and fun-factor of the games. DS got and psp got a bunch of console clones.

Having said that it's obvious what's wrong with the psp in retrospect. the games are being developed in the dawn of the next-gen rollouts so the psp just doesn't get the priority in developers' minds. Noone wants another stupid disc format for movies. I'm not paying $20 for another version of spiderman on a small screen. Why do they keep killing all the homebrew emus and stuff? Why is it so hard to get my own movies/video clips on it? That's the part that gets me the most, it would carve a nice niche as a more general media player if it supported the full res on the screen and made it easier to put vidcasts and such on it. make the media cheaper too.

SONY is planning to fix the console to handheld port situation with PSP exclusives, although i dont see a lineup and sellout day for the new Siphon Filter for PSP.

To be honest the only thing i would buy a PSP for is SOCOM, Can someone tell me if GTA has online gameplay (wait i not finished) like the one in the ORIGINAL GTA for PC?

Well this certainly changes things. Well for US audiences at least, i don't think tivos work here. This is kinda more a tivo followup though. they've been wheelin and dealin to make the tivo more capable on other devices. First yahootv, now ipods and psps. This will do good for both tivo and the psp.

PSP is all round better , but the games aren't as innovative as those on the DS , plus most of the people who owned gameboys , SPs etc. would want backward compatability with the games they already own....
PSP would have totally pwned if it had an integrated hard drive/ tons of flash memory  , would have eaten out some of the Ipod's market  , also if it  was compatible with Mini DVDs...burn a few  divX on a mini disc and you good to go.

flash memory isn't moving parts, and they're getting cheaper and more capacious. just look at the ipod nano. The thing is pencil thin and the flash memory in it is already obsolete. Everything should have divx support and ogg support but hardware ppl just don't listen.
