Worldwide support brewing for T&T Warriors
Wednesday, November 2nd 2005

A TRINIDAD and Tobago professional plying his trade in a part of the world where T&T's last opponent on the road to Germany 2006 comes from says he can guarantee support from that region of Asia for the Warriors.

Japan-based midfielder Silvio Spann boasted about the compliments and positive feedback he has received over the last few days since his return to Yokohama in Japan over T&T's victory over Mexico and the support for the national team in the upcoming World Cup qualifying play-off matches against Bahrain on November 12 and 16.

The former National Under-23 skipper is also aware of the attempts to dismantle T&T's hopes with the news of former scout David Nakhid's link with Bahrain, quickly followed by his denials, and Jamaica possibly accommodating the opponents on their Caribbean trip.

And Down Under, Trinidad and Tobago skipper and Sydney FC player Dwight Yorke has been getting well wishes from fans who are also familiar with T&T through the exploits of West Indies batting star Brian Lara.

According to some of the professionals based in the United Kingdom and United States, T&T's fan base continues to grow as the supporters attached to the respective clubs are backing T&T and have been requesting any Warriors paraphernalia available.

"These days I cannot describe the feeling because it seems that everyone wants Trinidad (and Tobago) to qualify for the World Cup," Spann told Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF) media officer Shaun Fuentes.

"You remember me after the game and I didn't even play against Mexico, but since then I have been enjoying every moment of it. The talk back at my club is 'Come on Silvio and T&T, let's do it. We believe you can do it'."

Spann added that the Japanese fans have been talking about having seen the Bahrain team in action.

"They all believe that we are a better team than Bahrain, but the most important thing is for us to prove it on the 12th and 16th," said Spann.

And as to what influence his father, former national midfielder Leroy Spann, is having in terms of getting the former St Benedict's College skipper ready for the biggest games of his life, he said: "He believed from day one that we could get to the World Cup and he's been through this already so, definitely, I have been trying to learn from his guidance. As a matter of fact, both him and my mom are already arguing about who is going to Germany to see the games."

"Like my brother Latas (veteran midfielder Russell Latapy) says it, we go vibes it up for sure, by the Grace of God," Spann stated.

Yorke has been a hit with the Sydney FC Supporters group who recently put up a banner with a T&T flag at one of the club's matches.

"It's an amazing thing because there's no doubt that if we can qualify for the World Cup a lot of people will be supportive of us. We all know what a story this will be," Yorke said.

"But before that, we have one more hurdle to get over and that has got to be our focus."

And while some of the attention recently has switched from the team and towards the Nakhid saga, T&T and West Ham goalie Shaka Hislop is confident the positive vibrations will return once the team assemble in Port of Spain on November 7.

"I think once we get together again and the preparations begin then everything will be in place for this game. Nothing will distract us and the people will know what has to be done in terms of supporting the team," Hislop said.

The overseas pros will return to Trinidad on Monday, while head coach Leo Beenhakker will arrive on November 4 ahead of the November 12 clash at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Tickets are also still set to go on sale on November 10 at advertised KFC outlets and Republic Bank branches and the T&TFF have also taken a decision to issue no complimentary tickets for this particular match.

A Soca Warrior’s Prayer

Almighty Father Who Art In Heaven,
We praise and thank you for the pain and joy you have given us in this World Cup Qualifying quest.
We pray for our Soca Warriors, that you keep them safe both on and off the field.
We pray that you grant them peace in their daily lives so that on match days, they are able to commit 100%, mind, body and soul.
Instil within them Father, clear minds, clean hearts and strong spirits.
We pray for the game referees, that their decisions are fair.
We pray for our opponents, that their actions are just.
We pray for the supporters, that their calls are words of encouragement for the team, and are not injurious to others.
We ask for guidance and wisdom for the TTFF and the Coaches of the team, so that decisions regarding football will be made in the best interest of the sport.
Father, we know as a humble country aspiring for greatness in professional soccer,
We pray that we find favour with you in this undertaking.
And Father, on game day, we pray for favourable weather and an incident-free game for both athletes and supporters.
We ask this in your Holy Name,
Amen.

admitedley dey started off lacklustre i thought, but it was down mainly to d fact dat shtupid bahrain cant play foot ball so was packin everybody in d box and only kickin d ball out....
i realll hope we beat dat side bc i wud hate to see dat type of football in d WC
i find it beta d way it turned out, bc we kno wat we hada do in d next match, win or at least score two goals for a draw so d affair wudnt be as cagey den

i find tho beenhaker does take long to make changes like if he fraid john and latas....to me if dey eh doin nutin u hada take dem off it have players on d bench den to wild de scene....

yeah  beenhaker took a while to take off stern. But yeah bahrain were packing the box and their defenders real big so the crosses were pretty ineffective the shots on goal from outside were pretty dangerous!

Anywayz even though bahrain will qualify if the results stay the same (sigh) , on the bright side their captain as well as another bahraini is out of the return leg on wednesday due to multiple yellow cards. So this is good

Disappointing showing and I hope for a better second match. Good goal scored by Birchall and lazy man stern john shoulda been subbed much earlier. I hope they much improve for the next match cause we hadda get 1 up on them. Them getting a 1 all on T&T soil is almost a win for them, even if they draw 0-0 next match they go thru and we salt. One would think with such support as was/is shown by T&T they'd have played better... I guess they are prone to choking when on home ground with too much support...

This is reminescent of 1989 although i was not born we were on the verge of qualifying to the world cup and in 1990 was the coup. This year we are on the verge of qualifying and bakr is in jail and the whole jamaat mad. Coincidence?

Anywayz the warriors always play better under pressure example against mexico, bahrain. So as we behind  on away goals right now up in bahrain we will play excellent.

I waited in line for 4hours to get tickets and then was there from 11 30 to get in the stadium on saturday so trinidad better win so we can get a holiday after all that commotion
