VIRTUAL ZONE TOURNAMENT
« on: November 08, 2005, 08:33:09 AM »
The internet cafe in Trincity Mall, Virtual Zone, is preparing to launch a huge pc tournament of which the winners will be sent foriegn to compete in a National Tournament, i.e. expenses paid trip, hotel and spending money. There will be thousands of dollars in prizes to be won, including one of the new XBOX that is currently being released and a ps2. The gaming catagories are SOF, Generals, Underground and probably Warcraft. This means that about 3 or 4 persons will be going  foreign, getting a new XBOX, getting a new Ps2, and alot of people will be walking away with cell phones, flash drives, gameboys and other stuff. The entrance fee will most likely be about $400 per tournament.
There will also be a school tournament. Will be back with more information later people.

If you change that SOF to COD (1 or 2), Unreal 2k4 or Quake 4 then I will be there for sure.

I just made this post in another thread but the same applies here. So copy and paste no jutsu!

the problem with such a high entry fee is that only people who think they stand a chance of winning will enter.

I don't think we have THAT many ultra competitive gamers willing to fork over $300 - $400 knowing fully well that the same top 3 - 4 players that have won all the tournaments in the past, will quite likely beat them up again.

Is like having a Tekken 5 tournament and setting entry at $400.00

How many will enter that? Knowing fully well that no one has ever been able to beat BryanMaster in a local tournament to date.

I think that the fee has to be reasonable so that even if you know you will lose, you'd still participate cause the fun of the event would have been worth it. Fair trade is no crime.

Saying the price has to be high because of the great prizes is not good enough either.

GATT sent three guys and one manager away to Guadeloupe for 8 days to compete in the caribbean cybersport cup and guess what the entry fee was for that tournament?

$0.00

Won a truck load of prizes. Cash, Nintendo DS, Speakers, Trophies, Games and more.

I think that pricing strategy needs to be revisited. The business community, government, associations and such are the ones that need to step up to the plate to bear the brunt of the costs. Not passing it on to the gamers in the form of ludicrously high entrance fees.

People we will be getting stuff, just for entering too. I'll take your advice and throw out the idea of Unreal 2k4 and especially quake 4.

You people are cracked in your bloody skulls. I don't know why people are talking so finely to say that that is bloody madness. $400 per tournament?.  lol x400...... thousand. No-one will enter. Maximum a man will pay to enter a tourny I think is about $50. Cuz there is no guarantee you are gonna win like Baego said a lot of people KNOW they won't win and so just won't enter as they would have entered for the fun if the price was say $25.

Uber take it a lil light nah hoss, your sttitude kinda upsetting me a lil bit. No need to be so harsh and sarcasm isn;t really called for here. It's responses like that that discourages people from trying to throw tournaments and get involved in gaming arenas in the first place. So here what i would be greatly appreciated if you kept your negative comments to yourself and sent out some suggestions, thas all we really wanna here, suggestions. Yu know me, and you know how i operate, it's never what you (ie. anyone) says to me but how they say it, and lol@ and hahaha and frickin, not really coming across right save the hahaha for if you beat me in tekken or something, won't happen, hahaha.

Well i reccomend talking to the guys that have done tourneys before ala Baego and they thay can give you suggestions and price drops etc of course you need to make back your cash cause the stuff you givin away not cheap but for the average gamer ...400 is way to much thas 1 orignal game prolly 30 sum acqired games or some else

yeah, is not what yuh do but how yuh do it.

this is a bit ambitious.

Even the ongoing tournament, Arena, with the $60.00 entrance fee and $3000.00 prizes was ambitious.

Far less for a $400.00 entrance fee.

In the past, our tournament have been $free to $45.

Most times $20.00 - $30.00

That said, they have been relatively small affairs and it is great for us to try and break that mold. Host larger events with bigger prizes.

I just think that sponsorship and such is the way to go in terms of raising the purse. As opposed to hiking up the entrance fee by that much.

I understand hoss. The problem is that these people trying to send people to the states, offering XBOX 360, cell phones, ps2 and soo many other great prizes. They was planning on a special location for the tournament that everyone would've loved trust me, nothing ever seen before, so how are they going to pay for all these things charging less than $100 per tournament. even if everyspace get's filled, they won't be able to cover their costs.

exactly.

sponsorship is the key.

not wanting to keep blowing our own horn, but look at that Caribbean CyberSport Cup event. It costs more to fly to Guadeloupe than it costs to fly to the states.

The prizes won were gaming consoles, surround sound speakers, cash money and more.

We got free accomodation, meals and transport.

Entrance fee to the Trinidad leg of the event? $0.00

Entrance fee to the Guadeloupe leg of the event? $0.00

Moral of the story is that such things can be achieved with sponsorship.

How much you think Brian Lara does pay to enter a Cricket Tournament with a Man of the Match prize of $100,000 motor car?

The key is sponsorship.

If It was $200. I'd say Jolly good day old chap, don't you think that's a bit pricey for the good old english?
But no. It was TWICE overly priced. So as drastic as your pricing was my response was. If you were talking to me about that tekken thing, working has made me lazy, I'm too burnt out to go off route. I just chill in J a v a on the way home. Someday when they get a TV we will sweat.

Hear what, uber.

Try providing that many prizes with $50 a head.
You'd hit poverty faster than Rosie O' Donnell could polish off a buffet table.
And I should know, I ran a tournament with so much on the line at $50, and, despite the overall success of the thing, it was serious catch-a$$ for me, because there was a lot more expenses that couldn't have been forseen.

So, unless you have personal knowledge of how these things are run and how much they end up costing the sponsors in the long run, keep your damn opinions to yourself and let those who know about these things worry about the price tag, all right?

Yeah....you guys will definitely have to do something about the $400 price tag.
Despite the perks, it's not exactly a big incentive to players who might see it as a huge gamble.
Sponsorship might be the ticket, though.
