San Diego (CA) - AMD scored a major win against Intel during the back-to-school season. According to Current Analysis, AMD outsold Intel for the very first time in US retail over the period of a whole month. More than half of all computer systems US stores sold during September carried an AMD processor.

Aside its usual legal, marketing and PR battles against Intel, AMD surprised analysts with a unexpectedly strong performance in US retail. Tony Duboise, analyst with Current Analysis, said that the company was able to sometimes surpass Intel's US retail sales in some weeks in the past, but the fact that it kept the lead over a whole month is unprecedented.

 Some factors would be the intel chipset/ motherboard shortage , and maybe  the fact that the Xbox is no longer in production  , which used an intel pentium III , either way this spells a big future for AMD , who will begin to compete with intel on more and more equal grounds , especially if they win the latest court battle .

   if intel takes over the market we'll be stuck with expensive  , slow gaming pcs ..... Competition is good...
  Also intel is working with microsoft to put in hardware that blocks illegal activity eg. mp3 downloads , burning copyrighted dvds...  we need AMD to provide an alternative to the evil .

Try not to take what Trinidemc is saying, illegal is relative in the Wintel world, things like ripping YOUR OWN MP3's from CD's YOU OWN can be considered illegal with the upcoming Windows Vista and the new architecture from Intel part of the whole Secure digital home future intel and MS are trying to push. If you've not read the threads on Vista and intel's new tech then let me fill in quick: imagine a world where u need a special monitor to watch ur own DVD's, and then imagine MS tells you how many times u can watch your DVDs then imagine they charge ur buddy who borrows ur DVDs cause its registered to you... now imagine that ur mp3s are no more cause only MS wms is supported by Vista, now imagine all this is in the hardware and can't be undone so ur basically SCREWED... but on the good side the money hungry MS and intel and the ppl at the record companies are happy cause there is absolutely no way for u to make backups... in their eyes "potential copyright" of the things u own.. and intel and MS are supporting this... so your future with wintel is... they own all ur rights and u can watch what they want WHEN they want and pay for it! sounds like fun right? and u wonder why we rejoice when the competition excels... oh Vista will also more the alternative OSes illegal... imagine that.. u WON'T be able to watch their 'protected' media on a Linux box that would be breaking the law.

I'd have to agree with this Baego

technically they're just companies, not processors. I think we should all do ourselves a favour and just support those that best suits our needs. The athlon64 hammers are great, but we all felt it when the athlon xp started slipping compared to the pentium 4 northwoods. Chances are we'd see another shift of power to intel again when the desktop remake of the pentium-m rears it's head. I dunno about AMD fanboys here, but i'm looking forward for intel to take the lead - why? because it would force AMD to make yet another boost in performance.

The same would happen if AMD takes over the market, bear that in mind...you need both to have that good competition. Anyway, what I was posting is you really can't fault them for putting in hardware trying to block illegal activity...after all, it IS illegal. Yes, people pirate like crazy because of the too-high prices...but. Why are the prices as high as they are in the first place? The more people pirate, the higher the prices will go up. Without trying to sound like I'm defending these corporations high pricing strategies...in a sense we've dug our own grave with a mentality to just download whatever we want instead of even considering buying it in a store.
