Trini while I agree with you, you also have to understand that these places that sell goods esp comp parts have to honour warranties (if they do that kinda thing, I doh buy from anywhere that doesn't). Warranties esp if they get stock from online FOREIGN etailers require shipping to,back etc. That can cost alot depending on the item. So First the have to cover costs, then they have to cover warranties, then they have to make a PROFIT (or what else is the point). So though in Trini they can be excessive with their overhead u have to expect at least SOME kinda price hike!. Also I agree with Rampagem yuh sure it wasnt' a mobile card?

Well let's see...for ripoffs on PC parts, I can say for a set of speakers....

This doesn't apply to all places down here, but when I was walking past a certain Net café in Trincity yesterday (I not calling any names), a Logitech Z-640 speaker system, which I managed to source for my gf about 5-6 weeks ago, and cost $384 to boot locally with 6 month warranty, was selling for a nearly ridiculous $795!!!

And Laptop City, don't even get me started about there...*still cussing about a white JBL setup for $999, that thing don't look like it worth half that amount, all style, the satellites are probably 1" speakers!!!*

Also I wonder what is Laptop City's warranty on such parts (if any!)...

As much as this thread is about hardware, the discussion pertains to ppl being ripped off... I don't think this thread belongs here as it is more of opinion on being ripped off than actually dealing with parts. Moved.

Ok now that this has been moved i'd like to add to this thread in a sligthly different manner that is more fitting of its new place. Rip offs... since I am not from Town (no offense to town pplz) there are quite a few things I think are rip offs in TOWN so here goes...
Sh@kers in M0vietown, actually drinks on a whole ANYWHERE in town....I have to find a hole in de wall or something where I can get a stag for $5-$6. TG1 (doh matter which one, north central or south) food not worth the price, I prefer Ruby Tues... HOTSHOP... $18 for a freaking SMALL (they call regular) @$$ beef roti... taste good yes but not worth THAT much. I'll stop there for now.

Spk I want a hook up too :)
Everyone wwhere in tnt rips you off , especially on electronics
Blame it on your 20% duty, and then 15% tax on the total which ammounts to a total of 38% tax, this is in addition to the companies SHipping cost to trinidad, and their markup.
You can't blame them

there is no tax on computer components :P .
Shipping is nothing,  most of those items they sell weigh less than a kilo .
I get free freight insurance... they could too.

Wanna bet?
Check your customs book(if you even have one) Big yellow book :)
there is a tax on ram, very small though, less than 5% if I remember correctly, and there probably is on other components.
ENTIRE systems carry no tax though, go figure.

You are right on the money laertes.

Mall rent starts at $15 a square foot.

A typical spread is 1000sq, that is $15,000.

Don't even talk about prime spots in town.

Then you have to furnish that place, pay employees, utility bills, and last and usually least, yourself.

Not an easy task unless you are selling cocaine.

Another point is the cost price of the item. Just because you bought the speakers on sale for us$50 from some overstock clearance website it does not mean the retailers down here are as "fortunate".

They may have picked up ten of those speakers a year ago, when it was the hot model, for us$200.00.

Saying they are "ripping" you off now is unfair considering the circumstance.

I used to think the same way at first but having dealt with this industry for over 10 years, I better understand how things really  work and why they are the way they are.

This is the reason most retailers will only stock mundane cheap components on the island and not risk buying high end exotic , components and putting them on the shelf, only to have some 17 year old kid buy it with his moms credit card from another 17 year old kid for much cheaper on ebay 3 months later and start to bad talk the retailer as "ripping off" trinidadians. lol

That said, wtmc @ TT$140 for usb cable from radioshack

ROBBERY!!!!!! That is de same one we wanted to buy crixx? pressura.
