Software Recommendations

This is the place to let everyone know what appz you think are good and wich ones are not.
I'll start with
Ulead DVD Workshop 2
which I think is the best DVD authoring app I have ever seen.
It allows you to add almost all video formats and create menusfor your DVD's. Not just one page menues with a PLAY button either, I'm talking full pro quality multipage menues that are fully customizable with video and audio, animated buttons and evn invisable links. The software also allows you to add Subtitles and multiple audio streams (for various languages if you want) to your DVD's. Compression is built in so that you can control the output size of your disc and you can burn directly from the app. You can even include an additional folder (such as an autorun, or pics) that will be added to your disc while maintaining the compatability with most DVD players. The program also supports macrovision copy-protection but an agreement with Macrovision is neccessary for this option to be activated. All in all it is a great program that works well and I highly recommend it.

Adobe Audition
- Is the best app for audio editing. You can add many effects to your audio files and output at studio quality. Supports mostl common formats and can even rip audio straight from DVD's.
Adobe Premiere 6
is great for video editing. Supports almos all codecs and can convert to mpeg for DVD output. Great for joiningor splitting video streams. Can add overlay video by dropping out a specified colour (green screening). Also allows multiple video and audio streams to be overlapped and mixed.
Dragon Naturally Speaking
- Best program for text to speach and voice recognition. You can control

Free BSD best command line OS (if yuh only using console that is)
Mac OSX best OS and best interface (trust me Multitasking on this makes ppl wonder what ppl on windows doing, besides wasting time, its so damn cool and fast)
NOTE: Visual Studio is NOT a programming language, there are languages within the suite, like C, C++, pearl, etc.
I would have to say I am partial to PHP.

I also use AVG and as far as the price goes
FREE
isn't a bad thing at all but I have just started to use Kaspersky and I must say so far I am impressed. It even has a built in firewall that gives me the ip of people who try to hack my machine. When I have given it a full review and tested it for a while I will give my recommendations but so far it looks to be better than AVG.

Softmac 8 / Gemulator 8 - best OS 8 emulator.
Allows you to actually install the full OS from the original disc on your PC with almost full functionality.
I even downloaded games and other apps with it and they all worked fine except for the ones that required a PowerPC processor.
With Pear PC this hardly seems necessary anymore but for people with older machines who would like to experience Mac software you can't go wrong.

I'm sure there is still a lot of good software out there that we haven't heard about yet so please keep your recommendations coming in.
For people who make there own software compilations or who just want to auto launch their CD's in style I would like to recommend
CDMenuPro Editor.
It offers many advanced autolaunch features, including but not limited to;
Startup splash screens
Startup Video (with built in avi player)
Background Audio (with volume controls)
Button designer for customised buttons
Can launch any file in it's registered program (e.g. *.xls, *.htm, *.doc etc.)
Supports mutiple paged menues
rounds off corners (it is possible to make circular or oval menus this way)
Custom Icons in title bar
Desktop covering in customizable colours
and much much more.
Highly recommended for the freeware and open source collector.
Great for making archival DVD's of school or office projects.

Depends on what you want to use it for.
STD is good for forensics.
SimplyMepis is pretty decent for an installable desktop as is PCLinuxOS.
Knoppix is decent all-round.

I want to use it for managing NTFS partitions.
e.g. say I can't get Windoze to boot but I need files from the drive. I want to load a live CD distro and get access to my files. Or if I for some reason forget the admin password to my Win XP machine I can recover it (or remove it) so that I can log in again.
also if there are any that come with W.I.N.E. or some such similar app that can allow me to run my windows progs.
