New System pentium dual core or a64 dual core
« on: September 06, 2005, 12:11:29 PM »
well im on the verge of building yet another system for personal use
preferably for video editing and gaming <no burning so on>

it lays down to this .. either the pentium dual core or the a64 dual core ive being hearing good about both
even though i am amdite i am still open minded to the pentium side remebr i got a limit to spend on the proc so the low range to medium range dual cores in your opinion which one is the better buy?

basis of the system beside that <for online mmorpgs need juiceth!>
2 gig ram .<value> - will ditch later for 1 gig ocz according to which dual core
200 gig hdd and thats it like i said for gaming only nothing to impressive
for now just a 6800gt or vanilla the 7800 can wait
antec power solutions <as usual>

Undoubtedly the cheapest DC solution would be the Pentium D 820, thats the 2.8GHz Dual core or 2 PrescHOTTs strapped together. Since this is for video more than anything else (like say everything else) this is prolly ur most affodable option. Besides intel is known for multimedia encoding. Heat will be an issue but in terms of cost thats ur best bet. Otherwise ur gonna have to put up some more moolah and get the X2 3800+ which will outperform the 820 but will come at a higher price premium. Up to you really... in this case I might actually favour the intel platform.

i was eyeing down that pentium d 820 for awhile now its very affordable and the system on whole isnt that bad the x 3800 i havent seen in action or seen a price$$
new eggs...........<damn you 56k...>....O_O the 3800 aint that bad off either but i still gotta feeling the pentium gonna lick it up in video editing ..T_T more research to be done

i'd prefer a64  , if you want to upgrade your pentium D you'll go through hell with intels requirements for a new chipset for every new set of processors , so the next batch of  Pentium D's though socket 775 will need a new mobo... Also i hear that intel chipsets have low level digital rights management  built in so it will make it more frustrating to rip music /dvds, download files etc. (but it can be hacked )

Core 2 duo E6600
Asus mobo
Radeon HD 4770
2 gigs DDR2 667 + 2 gigs DDR 800 OCZ

hmm,

I'd go with the AMD solution but maybe it is just bias since the price performance stacks in Intel's favour (for once, lol)

Trini does make a good point. The upgrade path is less forgiving on the Intel front. That is for sure.

Definitely something to consider.

While noted, the AMD upgrade path is somewhat limited too. The next dual core offerings will be the M2 socket and the 939 will be relegated eventually. So either way the upgrade path is short lived. The point trini made of the Intel system being dead end has no merit here cause the man building a NEW system so either way its completely new components so all dat 925X etc is moot. I am an AMD man thru and tru but in this scenario I think the intel solution is his best bet.
