How much would you pay for high quality , low ping broadband?
« on: August 29, 2005, 06:09:17 PM »
If a company could offer wireless broadband to anywhere in trinidad , at the same or greater quality than TSTT , how much would you pay for it ? Its possible for other companies to offer DSL class pings but it will cost more due to TSTT's stranglehold on the island's only reliable source of bandwidth ....

 big poll

but I woulda like to see a lower priced option in there.

considering what people in the rest of the world pay for broadband, I think TT$250 - 300 should be enough for a 512K or up, low ping connection.

Agreed...cos when I make my move to Calgary come October...I lookin to fix myself up with a 3mbit line :) ...and that only costs around CDN$50 or so...which works out to less than TT$300...for a 3mbit line! PLOY!! So, until then...dialup immc :P

Considering the rest of the world....

Keeping in mind that the lower costs largely come through high volume of users...so can those high volumes come through to get the price that low?

But in my case....screw dem...dial-up immc :P.

well there are other caribbean islands with high speed for that price.

they don't have the high volume as canada/korea/usa  but still give you more bang for your buck.

The right technology is key. IT can change the metrics completely. Like wireless, which saves you the cost of running massive infrastructure all over the island.

It ain't dog cheap, but it no where as costly as the land line setup.

It is there I rest my hopes for cheap game worthy broadband.

Only real  hope for cheap reliable  broadband for all would be  for tstt to get wi max in the soon future , or for tstt to buy out green dot and to allow them to use uber modified wi-fi...  TSTT using green dot's infrastructure  and fibre optic backbone , instead of wasting money putting a 4000 usd dish on everyone's roof , every time someone requests the service put one dish for the neighbourhood on his roof , and a modified wi-fi transmitter (to give about a mile radius range )   for everyone else who wants... so any more requests in that area will be supplied through cheaper wi-fi cards ..
Neither seem plausible at the moment,  but another wrinkle of hope ,  i called green just now and apparently they'r upgrading their residential connections to 512k (woot!) , so obviously TSTT may upgrade soon also.. any rumour that tstt was held back from the upgrade seems false , competition seems to be working....
if someone can get either ISP off their lazy ass to give 1mbit ,the next one will have to follow suit ( ADSL in tdad would max out at 1.5mbit far away , 3 mbit close to routing station, Green dot maxes out around 7mbits at 40-50 km) ..
What would be nice is for another ISP to provide reliable backbone bandwidth for trinidad and parts of south america.... get a few T3's run from venezuela to the coast , Wireless point to point to trinidad to supply us , and wireless point to point to Guyana , suriname etc... instead of competing with tstt/green dot for residential customers , supply green dot and high end businesses with bandwidth ,and re sell bandwidth to other countries without good bandwidth ie. suriname.....
OR for tstt to get undersea optic fibre run to venezuela and suriname... and for some miracle for them to offer T1 optic fibres around 1500tt for 20mbits to green dot etc. ,  Trinidad is strategically placed to act as a hub for carribbean/ south american bandwidth ... giving broadband goodness to our spanish/french/portuguese speaking brethren , and making us a major hub which will attract IT business investments from abroad... outsourcing to our skilled l33t programmers and engineers.. make it  possible for everyone and their mom to have 10mbit broadband for 200tt.. endless wi fi hotspots... gaming wans...
And with everyone playing WoW/Lineage/BF2/Halo2/CS: source or streaming Pr0n crime will go down drastically :p ,lots of jobs in ISP's / IT businesses , trinidad will be a first world country :p , albiet one with tons of  gaming/Pr0n addicts who sleep 2 hours a night.
