Training the n00b : Theory 101

  In the realisation that in order to grow my  clan will have to assimilate n00bs and train them in the ways of the gosu..   Therefore i have put some thought into training methods and gaming theory...
 
Firstly All people with decent intelligence and reflexes have the potential to become decent gamers once they practise enough , but what seperates  the true L33T and the semi L33t is not the amount of practise , rather natural characteristics that enable them to do well in a particular genre .
 eg. the best FPS gamers have quick reflexes , in games like Counterstrike and Raven shield  technique and strategy come into place but that can be learnt , reflexes can improve with practise but they can only get so fast for any one person, while technique and strategies can be learnt to a point (team FPS strategy is usualy simple and easy to learn ) .....
     
The best strategy gamers have a deep understanding of the game (which comes through pratice) eg. what spells to use , what upgrades to buy etc. ,  but most importantly the ability to innovate and improvise depending on the situation , most people just build a large army rush, attack, retreat, attack ,retreat  , try to neutralise your enemies resources / unit production and win the game... but true strategists will set traps , feints to draw the enemy out , use of misdirection etc . Most people can be taught to 'build 10 x , 10 x, 7 z fast  and rush!' but using those units most effectivly requires strategy.
   
Since PRACTISE is an essential part of training a n00b ,n00bs need to be supplied with means to practise , simple  games that help them learn  the basics of any genre  eg. unreal 2004  for FPS , which helps them develop genre spefic skills ie. reflexes for fps , after a few weeks/ months of practise you can assess their potential and begin to introduce them to the complicated games that everyone sweats eg. Counterstrike , teach them the techniques eg. how to spray short bursts  with the m4, to tap with the CV47 , and proceed to training them with TEAMWORK ....

  In team games the n00b must learn to follow orders , take initiative etc. ,  each unit of your squad must understand the overall strategy and be able to complete someone else's objective's if that person is eliminated , they must be able to function strategically by themselves but also be cohesive in the overall strategy ....
 
 Training semi gosu to become gosu involves setting those semi gosu against almost impossible competition , The level of reflexes  required as a gosu FPS gamer can be met by training against EXPERT CS: source bots or GODLIKE unreal bots wth instagib , mod script AI for Warcraft /Warhammer will bring that level of strategy out ... also bringing together skilled people in a particular genre helps them develop as they will share / steal tips and tricks ..

  True a large percentage of n00bs will always be N00bs due to plain n00bishness , dotishness etc. But some n00bs can become L33t with the proper training , one thing that keeps n00bs n00bs is hitting them with complicated games early on... it gets them confused and discouraged , if you want to teach a n00b how to play strategy ,at least teach them how to play chess/chekers first  to determine whether its worth the time... IF they do have potential , after a few games of chess take them to a simple RTS game  with only 1 resource , basic units ....

well it's a worthy endeavour. In the ocean of noobs there is bound to be a certain number of diamonds in the rough. Ultra Gamers who have yet to tap into their hidden power.

Over the years, we have seen a number of them spring up from the ranks.

Dest, Neon, and Badboyb come to mind.

Not everyone is an ultra gamer, but not everyone needs be. A squad of trained noobs can make for a damn good sweat and decent clan comrades.

Infact, a trained noob would easily woop an untrained ultra gamers ass in his game of choice due to experience.

Of course, If they both had the same experience level, then the higher skill of the ultra gamer would secure him victory.

Go forth and start converting minions to the way of the keyboard and mouse. Show the masses the dark arts of the gamepad.

Train them well. Their talant will need to be honed, sharpened razor thin for the coming battles.

I dunno how much this actually pertains to the topic, but to me a big part of being a n00b is "honour". IMO to get better you HAVE to play to win using ALL the tools at your disposal. In the past I remember persons calling certain things cheap. After some time it dawned on me, there is no cheap, effecient tactics are regarded as cheap. In SOF for example many persons regard the USA12(if thatz the name of the gun) as "cheap" because it can easily kill you in 2 - 3 shots. A lot of people tend to forget its major drawback ie range. Anyways I mainly play fighters so I'll stick to those for examples. Another thing is that you can as the saying goes "lead a scrub to water but you can't make him think" this could probably be taken in the same context as a trained n00b, the main tool at your disposal in any game is your mind, so obviously a mind game  has to be part of a strategy ( this can apply outside of the fighting arena).  Many n00bs use one strategy over and over and over. Fairly easy to see through in most cases, defeat this strategy and they're at a loss, but they won't change the strategy they'll continue doing it because quite simply it's all they know.
I have found that the best gamers are those with the will to dominate, in their mind they must totally destroy their opposition. This takes us back to the tools thing , using all the tools at your disposal. Exploiting the game engine,glitches, bugs, infinite combos. Once these aren't totally breaking the game ( ie freezing the opponent so he cant move , or crashing the opponents pc etc) they're fair game in my book. I highly recommend visiting  David Sirlin's website and reading his articles in playing to win and art of war good stuff.

It's not really applicable but a good post all the same!

in this context, a noob is just your basic unskilled gamer. Nothing but a biological mass of potential.

If trini goes out there and drafts a couple of these noobs into his clan, trains em, he should come out with at the very least....trained noobs.

If he is really lucky, there may be an ultra gamer or two in the lot. They will go super saiyajin level 3 and wtfpwn clansmen all over the gamedom. lol

as for your post, it's a poetic definition and spot on.

Cheap is frequently used as an insult in the console/arcade world. (same can apply to noob/scrub). In that context, there is no issue of honor. It's just a derrogatory term.

That said, I totally agree with you. The use of "cheap" moves can be the only way to take a game to it's competitive limit. Playing any other way will lessen your skill when faced with true competitors. In a friendly setting, nothing is wrong with avoiding them for the fun of it.

I can relate to rb with the "honour" code, i have played with some friends in a fairly new cafe in Chaguanas and a guy on my team was playin' de a$$. I told him literally that he was and showed him what he should do, over a period of time i have seen hi skills gotten better. He may not be really good but better noe the less. And from a simple buuf and advice he has probably become the most polite gamer i know. Yeah, he polite, kinda like sportsmanship for gaming, and he goes with a code of honour like not cussin his teamates when they make an error and complmenting enemies on good moves.

But overtime i have seen people or n00bs lose this honour thing and its anything goes. For instance, yuh shoot yuh partner by accident he cuss yuh, he died because yuh aint shoot de man who kill him, and he cuss yuh again, the politeness thing and honour whatnot will have to go away. This is what n00bs have to break out of to become better, shoot to kill if yuh kill yuh partner and de man dai no scene.....and thats all i got to say about that!!!

training the n00b this is interesting first off dont the guys you bring in to join your clan feel a little dumb when you call them that to me a clan thrives on this.
1)Friendship
2)Loyalty
3)Good Sportmanship
4)Respect
5)Understanding
When you get newbies for your clan dont forever call them a noob thats what breaks down the respect of there clan leader etc or whoever is training them?.Though i have named a clan my quest for newbies aka noobs is a long one to me time and patience and a good area to sweat for free or as little as it cost is training spot  for the best introduce them to the game all genres see which ones they like and which ones they naturally have a nack at then develop from there let them work on there skills with your genre genious. well ..thas it trini otherwise has an alrightish plan.
Remember you where once a n00b yourself so just think back on how you got better what the ppl around you did to help you advance your skill and there you go a teaching system of its own.
Understanding part good example for Trinimc is pleb ..lol patience is a virtue them very same men that does give trouble in home practise sweat and thing might very well be the men to pull you out of the trash can when you gettin owned lemme review it a lil more and add some more

i say everyone starts off as a noob and that we shouldnt look down on them..we were them once upon a long time ago..i still consider myself a noob and not a master or gosu in every game i play or played, but i can hold my own so doh test.
