Hey Guys,
Got some news ! I recently heard from a reliable source that TSTT had plans to double the bandwidth again on the residential lines to 512k (probably to compete with people like Greendottt) , but just as they were about to announce it to the public one of their competitors complained to the Regulated Industries Comission (RIC) that it would be unfair business practices. Subsequently, the RIC told them (TSTT) that they could not do it and all plans for the upgrade were scrapped !!! mad.gif
Suddenly it seems that the introduction of competition into the market may not necessarily be such a good thing !!! mad.gif"

dont understand why this would be bad business practice, all of this sounds unfounded to me
and further more, there are people in west moorings who have 512.
Installed dsl for a person at work 2 weeks ago. She lives in west moorings and has 512k..
lady doesnt even know wat that means.... nor does she use the net more than 2wice a month...
but since shes living in that strata of west moorings
guess what
she gets 512...

We have a 512 and a 256 in our offices. If you can afford it don't even think about it - 512!

How much more does 512 cost? Can I get it as a residential user?

Not bad business practice?
You have to consider for what most prospecting companies may look to start with initially.
They would have to be charging $400+ a month to get a 512k connection for residential customers, so they'd faster look to supply a 256k connection.
Now if you were the main player in town, and you decided
"Hey, let's squeeze out the competition by increasing the connection bandwidth, while keeping prices low, nobody go want to go with them other mcs then for sure! Plus, we have our infrastructure in place already, most other places can't drop lower than us right now as is cuz they still have to put infrastructure in place, so we can squeeze we pockets for a few months and then buss price idmc afterwards when competition dead!!!"
Won't you see that as bad business?
Kinda Microsoft-ish actually...
It sucks, but that's how regulations are, since it could have benefitted customers in the process, but their reasoning for it is definitely not us...
Plus I couldn't care about this, cuz I have no way to get DSL here anyway...

You do know that u can get T1 DSL lines... i'll call no names but certain influencial ppl and important business ppl in ths country have wha is effectively a T1 DSL line... and btw not all of said ppl even have to pay... u get the idea of who dese ppl could be... anyways, I fully understand them havig to limit it as its bad for competition. Cause lets face it TSTT has he edge in terms of reaching ppl. Greendot, CAribel and all the other providers have TSTT links as backups to theirs or rely solely on TSTT's fibre backbone. So ultimately they collecting money from their competition. It would be insult to injury if ON TOP OF THAT ur competition (TSTT to the others) matches ur service at a lower price and u STILL PAYING THEM. So I think its a good move to help the other comps have a fighting chance. Plus as I said there are ppl with T1 DSL... so 512 not being for everyone imho isn't that bad. Jes ppl keep wanting more and more for less or same. As they were saying on 95.1FM this morning, u know u living in 2005 when you:
1. u Email msgs to the person in the desk next to u
2. Ur boss is NOT able to perform all of his workers tasks himself
3. U blame not keeping in touch cause u don't have someone email addy
4. U have 15 phone numbers for a family of 3
5. u have many more conveniences but still less time ( i added this one cause its true)

Well T1-speed DSL is available for businesses, for somewhere around $4300 a month...
Lord knows when residential users would get speeds of even half that....

We've had a T1-speed DSL line at the office for quite a while now, over a year I think, maybe more...it's sort of spoiled my internet experience now tho...cos once you get accustomed to downloading stuff at 200k/sec...there's just no going back...that's the main reason I ditched greendot...to go from 1.54mbit to 256kbit...that's just 1/6 of what I am accustomed to...not cuttin it...plus to add insult to injury, I ain't never seen the full 256kbit while I was on greendot...was closer to dialup for me.
But moving to 512k would have been a step in the right direction
Tough luck on the whole RIC thing...you win some, you lose some.

Pardon the stupid question, cause I still dont fully understand what happened. But this means that there is no chance of there being a 512k tstt dsl? Or that this was just some kinda delay or something....

Prolly more of a delay than a never Proto. Eventually speeds will increase and perhaps even the damn cable comp will get their act together and start offering cable dsl or heck even the power companies around the world have been looking at broadband over their power lines (as in additonal cables as their infrustructure is EVERYWHERE). My cous in NYC get 720KBps note NOTE kbps but KBps as in 5.76mbps and there are ppl who are now gettig 2MBps cable dsl. Our rates are laughable when compared to the US and Europe. But the fact I am making is in time even we plebs will get closer and closer to those kinda speeds.... may take 10yes though bakas that are our ISPs (esp TSTT)

wdmc happen to my post??? steups
anyways
yeah, first off, green dot does not have a tstt backbone or a tstt failback connection.
cariblink yes.
lisa no, lisa has their own sub sea bonded t1s, weak bandwidth but atleast it not thru tstt.
the purpose of introducing competition, is for the consumers to benefit, not the businesses.
only way to get tstt to act right, is to scare them with competition,so we finnaly gettin wat we pay for from them, well not really, since we still paying more than 2wice wat people in de states an uk paying for 1.5 mbps dsl so lets not even go there.
Men come to the country to compete with tstt, but when tstt start to compete back they bawling an cryin?
Like de reallly expected tstt to roll over an die so then they would be the monopoly (conspiracy
hmmmnn)
SOunds jussssstttt like how whiny amd is about intel offering their 1337 products at 1337 pricing now
pfft
whiny babies, if yu wah play ah mans game, yu hadda take lixs like ah man

lol
our only real hope for a leapfrog in bandwidth speeds is competition.
Strong competition.
TSTT will be the boss until someone else get a terrestrial link off the island. I think everyone agrees on that.
TSTT is the most hated ISP (with greendot coming in close second)
That still leaves room for someone to hammer the market with a decent offering at the right price.
My bet is on a wireless provider to do this. Either with 3G GPRS or WiMax. Both technologies hold the key to competing with technology in the internet space.
Wimax also will allow a link to venezuela without the need for sub oceanic cabling (very expensive!).
all we have to do now is cross some fingers and wait.
Either that or move to another island/continent.

Actually, for some
ODD
I was getting about a 512 speeds
See, I have a meter that measures the internet usage, the upload speed and download speed, and usually download is about 30kbps....but it was doing MUCH faster than that. So i did a bandwith test and it came out to about alittle under 500
When I check back this morning though, it was back to normal....so that was very strange
