ATI CROSSFIRE

Well folks the time for multi-video cards is here, and both Nvidia and ATI have a solution of sorts... seems we're going dual and multi on everything, just now i'll have a multi girlfriend whos able to work, cook, and spend time with me twice as good. Anyways I am not able to post the full summary so i'll give a link and u can sift thru it urself. If demand reqs I will filter it out and give a brief. I will post pics though. Here's the link:
http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=2432
And below are the pics. To point out what it is ur looking at, the mobo contains the ATI chipset req to run their dual card implementation, though there is speculation that they might get it working on Intel and *GASP* even SLI chipsets, its possible at least in theory. Also is a diag of the logical working of the architecture in terms of data flow and separation. Then of course there is a pic of the card itself and the dongle that connects them. Its no hard PCB as in SLI but it is external and flexible. I will update with more notes as time goes along. Oh before I go, ATI released some figures claiming that their crossfire is as much as 90% faster at ultra high settings (1200x1600 with 4xAA and 16x Ansio) for Doom3 and other games.

It's got it's pluses and minuses...just like the nVidia solution...have to wait for actual silicon benches to make a final decision...but I read over the weekend that by the time ATI is actually shipping product (CrossFire cards & mobos) nVidia will have slashed prices across the board on SLI mobos to bring it close to or even below US$100...interesting times ahead

I read about this but was too swamped to post. MCMCMC
damn you w1ntry!!!
anyways, the most interesting part is that it claims to boost all games, not just select titles.
good to know but like czar pointed out, it is a really a matter of waiting for real world benchmarks.
ATI claimin 15 - 20% gains is rhetoric until we can see the power ourselves.

ATI'S answer to Nvidia's SLI technology
«
Reply #8 on:

Its ATI's crossfire technology...it requires one ATI crossfire edition card, a Radeon Xpress 200 CrossFire edition main board and any ATI crossfire ready video card. For full details check out the link below:

nice post
but did you read the bit about Nvidia's SLI for the masses?
making SLI setups a dog simple affair with their latest driver upgrade? No link cable, sli cable, nada. Works with lowly 6200 cards and up.
Think ATI could make an answer to that as well?
Simplicity being key.

there is one feature in particular that I like and that is you don't have to have a pair of video cards with equilivant hardware characteristics (for example you would be able to use a x300 crossfire ready card with an x850 xt crossfire edition card and vice versa). Each card however would perform at a magnitude equilivant to that of the maximum performance of the lower end card (if any). So in the example with the x300 and the x850 xt, both cards would perform like a x300.
as far as simplicity goes...well that is a personal view

well coldy my boy, with the release of the 77.20 drivers and the 7800 line, nvidia will be offering that same feature with their cards.
2 unlike cards runnin in sli
with no sli connector!!!!
dont even need to be the sli version of cards, aka, non gt and non ultra cards will work as well

Seriously....I was not aware that nvidia's SLI technology supported that feature (btw can you post the link for my reference).
So I guess it all boils down to the cost, driver support, and system resource efficiency when determining between the SLI and crossfire (should be available in August 2005)
to me Nvidia's force drivers are alot simpler to install than that of ati's catalyst software, ati cards are less demanding on your system's power supply, nvidia cards are easier to overclock which can be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your cooling apparatus, some radeons prevent you from making any alterations in the core speeds as a safeguard which can either be a pro or a con, and both ati and nvidia high end cards are approximately the same price.
