SUN MICROSYSTEMS has trumpeted its success with its Sun Fire V20Z and V40Z AMD based servers and it turns out that Dell Financial Services gets a boost from using Opteron chips.

Which must be a bit of an embarrassment for Dell, a firm that only sells Xeon processors to its own customers.

According to a statement made by Sun, and which can be found here, Trution migrated its servers from 32-bits to 64-bits using the Sun Fire boxes.

This system, said Sun, "will offer Trution the extra capacity needed to process high traffic and e commerce transaction loads for customers such as Dell Financial Services."

So is the AMD sauce for the goose, sauce for the Dell customer gander too? It's clear that Dell has been evaluating Opteron processors, but so far it's not selling them in its online shops.

  possibly Intel has an agreement with dell to prevent them from SELLING AMD based machines , but nothing says they can't use them !
