What to expect with future AMD processors
« on: July 20, 2005, 08:51:46 AM »
Well for 1 PCIe integrated onto the die, yup yuh heard right, integrating the PCIe onto the processor, there at least 1 reason for the new 1200+ pin count there are some other goodies but i'll let you read it urself:
Quote
AMD to integrate PCIe

Intel to follow later

By Charlie Demerjian: Wednesday 20 July 2005, 09:20
SO, AMD TOOK THE computing market by storm with their integration of the memory controller, showing most of the world what the word latency means, and why it is important to them. Intel will follow on the server side with TT, but that is still a way off. How do you follow this up if you are AMD?

That one is easy, you integrate PCIe onto the chip. Latency for just about everything takes another huge whack, and everything from video to 10 GigE gets faster. For the home, you get more frames and better graphics responsiveness. For the business world, you get latency reduction on I/O, latency reduction on I/O, and latency reduction on I/O as the three most important things.

If you were wondering what all those pins on S1207 were for, wonder no more. If you need I/O that scales with the number of CPUs, look no farther. If you want this from AMD, it will happen. If you want it from Intel, it will happen too, just 18-24 months later, *COUGH* Nehalem *COUGH*.

This one is a clear win for AMD, or it will be when it comes out. Other than pins, and the associated cost, I really don't see a down side. You can always add more lanes with a HT based controller if you feel limited, but AMD would probably prefer that you add CPUs.

Don't count Intel out though, there are more than enough *T's coming down the pipe to keep them in the game. Look for some this coming IDF, and another tomorrow.

AMD will probably gain enough performance from this move alone to top the dothan! gaming performance will increase , probably not noticably,  but enough that combined with other improvements it will put amd ahead of the revivded P6 architecture processors intel is set to release in 2006  .
Also this will make multi core architecture interesting , will dual cores have 2x the PCI-X bandwidth ? or will the second core have no PCI-E controller making it less complex than the first ?
Of cours intel will follow in AMD's steps in a few years to try and catch up :p , and will amd continue with this trend?  in a few years will we get integrated audio and LAN on our motherboards ? maybe a PPU  eventually , they might even integrate a basic GPU for 2d  in some models  , they won't dream of trying that with a powerful  GPU , a 7800GTX has 2x more transistors than any CPU does !
Think about it , few people will build gaming rigs based on a celeron or sempron  , adding in  a 2d  GPU will decrease the cost of barebone systems a bit and also make it impossible for many office workers to play anything other than solitaire .

Not likely, unless Intel bites them in the @$$ so hard that they move onto better tech, but hey that rebate system that Dell gets from Intel is too much of a lure for them just yet. And EVEN if they do it'll only be in the SERVER market I am sure.
