Programs running on a video card ?
« on: June 13, 2005, 08:07:54 PM »
Scientists at Los Alamos have developed a coding language to be executed on modern computer graphics cards , which allows them to perform mathmatical functions like a CPU does, but many times faster .
Even low end cheap graphics cards eg.  your average Geforce 5200 has a processor faster than most modern CPUs and video ram running at or faster than DDR 400 speed , so a  well coded program will process data faster than your CPU ,  this has interesting implications ,  people can re-compile programs that normally kill even high end PCS to run on a video card, effectivly making it a 2nd processor , allowing you to multi task with your  CPU much easier  .
With high end graphics cards like the Geforce 6800 or Radeon x800  coming equipped with 512mb of RAM and bieng able to run in configurations with 2 or 4 graphics processors in the same PC ,  scientist may no longer need to rent / buy massive super computers to test their theories or process data from experiments , they can just buy  or build a gaming system for 2000 US or so , instead of  several 10 000  + supercomputers to do the same job at the same speed , the only problem   would be that programmers will have to learn a new language , which would take a few days to weeks , but the advantages will most likely outweigh the disadvantages .

this is also an excuse to spend a whole pile of money on a video card...... and tell your boss it will  increase your performance  ;) .

lol

but that is precisely what a graphics processor does!!

mathematical calculations, like a CPU, but FASTER because it is dedicated to the task.

That is some serious "no duh" comin from scientists no less.

They need to get out more. Tell them go and talk to nvidia if they want to know about good "math calculations" and how to implement them.

Or lend 'em some Glide, D3D and OpenGL books.

Funny Mac has been doing this for some time now. Now I know most ppl aren't Mac ppl or know much about it, however since OS X Apple moved their desktop basically ONTO the GPU. In short, think of it as ur interface being converted to OpenGL then displayed. With the recent release of Tiger they have completely moved the interface onto the Video card making use of the MASSIVE bandwidth the GPU to Video RAM has (up to 30+ GBps in some cases). Thats why the interface in an APPLE looks SO good. Plus use of vector graphics u minimize and/or eliminate pixelation of icons, pics, etc. As seen in the docking stations (really pretty taskbar) on OS X. Plus all the really cool zoom/water/shrink/etc seen. If u've never seen multitasking on an Apple (YES even with a ONE button mouse) u really don't know HOW TERRIBLY FAR BEHIND Windows and Linux are. Its gorgeous, functional, FAST!!! eg. If I recall correctly since panther if u move ur mouse pointer to the extreme left of the screen, the entire desktop zooms out bringing up a view of all the applications u have open side by side however retaining the look of each app window as if they were maximized. Picture like 7 little screens open for u to chose 1 that u want to use. Its really cool to say the least... ok time to stop preaching how good OS X is...  we just have to wait a while and we'll have it on our X86 PC's!!!

lol

sounds cool but also sounds like a good reason why games aren't a driving force in Mac Land.

using the GPU for such "candy" when it could have been better used to render a tank in battlefield 2. lol
