A gay school...literally

The Harvey Milk High School will enroll about 100 students and open in a newly renovated building in the fall. It is named after San Francisco's first openly gay city supervisor, who was assassinated in 1978.

"I think everybody feels that it's a good idea because some of the kids who are gays and lesbians have been constantly harassed and beaten in other schools," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Monday. "It lets them get an education without having to worry."

The school is an expansion of a two-classroom public school program that began in 1984. A gay-rights youth advocacy group, the Hetrick-Martin Institute, has managed and financed the program since its inception.

The new school's principal, William Salzman, said the school will be academically challenging and will follow mandatory English and math programs. It also will specialize in computer technology, arts and culinary arts.

State Conservative Party Chairman Mike Long criticized the creation of the school.

"Is there a different way to teach homosexuals? Is there gay math? This is wrong," Long said. "There's no reason these children should be treated separately."

The Hetrick-Martin Institute's Web site says the school will give its students "an opportunity to obtain a secondary education in a safe and supportive environment. ... We believe that success requires the ability to respect and value the diverse human community."

What ya'll think of this? I could already see alot of people are going to be "that is nasty, and wrong" and all that sort of stuff....Its the kind of world we live in today.... People claim to be open minded, but are quite the opposite...its quite sad...

i think it helps parents feel that thier "normal " kids are safer from the influences and wat nots from these socially rejected persons
but on a personal note i think that different sexual orientation is cool as long as u dont invade my personal bubble in a sexual way wen i explicitly express my desire not to accept your advances

i like what theyre doing but as long as IGNORANCE is a disease that school could become dangerous other children , adults bashing at students ,defacing the property ...its a risky move ..

they will have a place to have their basic right to education with out being harressed and threaten every minute of the day

the school itself may come under fire from the outside
but while yur inside, it should feel so great to just be yur self and learn

buh at the same time, its bad, cause its like saying that instead of dealing with the ignorance in public schools, we will just remove the ones being prejudiced and leave the others in school.

there will never be no win situation when it comes todealing with a topic such as homosexuality there will always be the ones protesting for its rights and the mass of the detesters doing so much moreharm ...ppl need to realize that this is not world war 3 and they have to hear people out sure u might not like or ur religion does not promote homosexuality but this is how some people where brought up and they cannot change this some would like to but thats just the way life is it makes me shake my head when i see people on tv even in or native country bash out at balsphemys so they call them ..what is the world coming to are we allbeing devoured by HATE?
