(Global) Battlefield 2 preview
« on: June 11, 2005, 10:33:24 AM »
First off the graphics and gameplay are amazing , a great improvement over the original, BF 1942's weapons were a helluva lot more innacurate and harder to control even when crouched or prone ,  and though the recoil is about the same , the assault rifles pack enough punch to drop an enemy in 2-3 shots . The game features adapting maps that lock off areas when there are not enough players , so the maps can be huge enough to fit 64 people , or small enough for an 8 player game to be comfortable and not have to run for 15 minutes to reach the enemy base .  Combined with fairly capable ( though still retarded ) bots to assist a small team of human players , the game is alot easier to enjoy than the previous ones .
I'll do a more in depth preview and post more screenshots in a few hours .

the game is completely different .. haven't got to try out the aircraft yet , will probably need a LAN/internet game for that . Dice in sweden really did a good job  , the graphics and gameplay are superb , it greatly improved on the standard battlefield gameplay mechanics , now you have one 'Battle commander' giving most of the orders  and directing the strategy , so everyone else can focus on their particular task eg. sniping , anti tank, assault without having to spend time asking for backup  or artillery .  It gives the game a much smoother pace , so n00bs can hop right in without bieng too overwhelmed  . And remember having to do boring artillery firing / spotting jobs?  now the cannon fires itself once given an an order , and once you have your radar station up, you don't need to ask for targets .
Definately the multiplayer game of this year ,  but problem is the hardware requirements , you NEED 512mb of RAM to run it without getting chopped at 5 frames  a second ,  its very playable at 1 GB and some task switching can be done , but seeing as i don't have norton/ spyware / firewall running like most pcs do , i don't recommend trying  .
it all boils down to this :
Pros : better graphics
           better gameplay
polished  and smooth combat system and interface
less strategizing done by the player , and more frag !
new weapons and vehicles , lots of maps .
'smart' maps that condition themselves to the no. of players on them.
Cons : massive hardware requirements , minimum spec is Radeon 8500 or Geforce 5700 , 512 DDR  and 1.7ghz
to actually enjoy the game you need a 9800 pro / geforce 6600gt ,
            1 GB of RAM and a 2.4ghz P4 or athlon 2600 .
You would probably need a fast dedicated server for 32 or 64 player games .

Well, i running with a weak 5200 and its playing pretty good, but just the loading times are a bitch.

Yea, only got to run a single player, so no airplanes just yet, but its cool. Although....the audio seems to be in spanish, the single player mode is Mexico vs USa (ironic huh) but even when playing with USA, the audio is in spanish....weird...but im not complaining :D

eh?  its  Arabic nations vs USA  though the arabic flag looks alot like the mexican flag , you probably got yourself a spanish language demo :p  , i noted some new features , medics can actually heal most injuries with their shock paddles, so unless you die inside a vehicle, once a medic is around you can be revived , US assault troops have the M4 grenade launcher and smoke grenades, and tanks have smoke screens , the arabs have variants of the AK47 / 74 for everything but their special forces and snipers  . in the full version there will be a chinese side too... can't wait for it .
The game is alot more CPU and RAM intensive than it is graphics intensive... i just clocked my 6600gt down to 200mhz core / 600mhz RAM , which is about 9600xt speed , and it still played good at 1024x768 with everything maxed out ,  the physics and game subsystem are to blame,  DICE traditionally makes sloppy system hogging games .

oh sweet mother!

Protojoe now dropped it off.

Install and runnin iwmc!

The single player may run a bit slow cause of the AI using up cpu and ram cycles but the multiplayer will be smoother.

we gonna give it a test run now.

whoa!

The game is sweet! we now run a lan server, didn't even bother to make it dedicated and played smooth. No lag or warping. Zero matrix.

Haven't seen any planes on the map we played though. We did the 16 player version.

Maybe the 32 version opens up those.

Vehicles were easier to fly in Vietnam over BF1942: Desert Combat.

Remember, they were native to the game. This is no different.

lol @ xbox ver. Hoss, I would be VERY surprised if this ever makes it to xbox, given the demanding specs.

This would only be feasable on XBOX 360.

Lucky for me, I've got a powerful PC. lol

suhuweat!!!!!!!!!!

On that note, while it does run on the FX 5200, it ran much better and looked much better on the 6600 GT.

The gameplay is pretty much the same which isn't a bad thing. I really like how flags go up faster if you're doing it with team mates as opposed to Solo. Really encourages team play. Similar to the Onslaught mode of UT2004 where team mates could capture points faster than a lone hero running off half cocked.

The graphics for guys riding shotgun and manning turrets is awesome. Sweet animation for it too. Sound effects are also spot on.

My only gripe, not big enough explosions! Was hoping for some over the top pyro works. That said, they are still an improvement over the predecessor.

Maybe for Battlefield 3: Future Wars.

lol

good game.

Haven't played around with the commander role yet but will soon. The voice feature is enabled but the game started, we didn't use it. We got all the machines with headsets but since we are in the same room, shouting worked just as well. lol

I give it a 9/10
