well first off i love 2d brawlers cant get enough of them but do you think that they are phasing out and its time for the 3dto come on and Dominate a la tekken 5 ...soul calibur 3 .

some of the best 2d brawlers ive seen have come out during this generation but i never really hear the big ups for them or so
Capcom vs snk 2 , marvel vs capcom 2, gulty gear x to name a few. to me i love the CvS series and im a die hard Kof fan

look at SvC chaos ...Snk Vs Capcom chaos ...that came out what happened to it i cant even find it to buy :( ....
it would be sad to see the 2d phase out ..

If you're looking locally for a big up with those games you'll find very few ppl actually doing that without sounding super fanboyish. Those 3 games are very popular internationally on the tournament scene. MVC2 is so damn old and its still the main event at Evolution, hell even SSF2 Turbo is still played. The communities for these games online are huge. Shoryuken.com and Gamecombos.com are some examples

SVC sucked major nuts, didn't take long to see that when after 2 days I already had over 80% damage combos for every character. Broken doesnt begin to describe it. 2D is far from phasing out, the fans of the genre are still around and it will be around for a while. Oh another thing, Sony doesnt like releasing 2d games that much anymore in America. It is very apparent because many older 2d fighting classics have been re released on the PS2 over in Japan and when the option came up to launch them in the states it was shot down.

I would say 2d fighting is alive and well. The PS2 has some great ones and even though most of em are Japanese games they're still around. PS2 has  Street Fighter Anniversary Edition, Guilty Gear XX  ,CVS2, MVC2 (shitty port), Darkstalkers Collection, KOF collections, The Rumblefish (j), KOF Neowave (j), Garou MOTW (j) , The Last Blade Collection (j). XBOX is the real flick for 2d fighters as almost every 2d game out on the XBOX has LIVE support, definately a plus.

New 2D Fighters for 2005/2006

KOF XI
Neo Geo Battle Coliseum
The Rumble Fish 2
Samurai Shodown 6 (Atomiswave)
Spectral vs Generation
Guilty Gear XX #Reload Slash ( upgrade)
New Darkstalkers in dev.

I'm a big kof fan also :P

2d brawlers aren't a thing of the past , there will still be fighting games in the future with beautiful 3d graphics, but force you to move in 2 dimensions .  And we will also be able to emulate older 2d fighting games like we do now :p

It's just so "old".

You hardly find people getting excited about a 2d fighter because it's so 1980s.

Still great games and great gaming but just not "stop the presses, send mom an sms" worthy.

Ever since the arcade scene began its steady decline in the states and the caribbean, these games have got less and less limelight.

In the past, console gamers weren't the most vocal bunch online. As PCs and internet become more ubiquitous, that is set to change.

Infact, it has been our goal this year, to draft them into the fold in a big way.

2D fighters (and fighters on the whole actually) promotion idmc.

Laertes touches on a good point though. If they aren't making big money for the developers, we will see a serious reduction in their production.

The arcade scene is all but dead and that was their biggest market.

The console scene is greedy for innovation and throwin out a 2d fighter at that diverse market isn't going to generate runaway sales figures unless it totally wftpwns the stuff already out there.

No easy task.

Great thread btw!

nice post to rb, take some chakra iymc for dat.

for true. The 2D fighters really have nostalgic purposes to some people. 3D fighters are getting there however,  allot better.

How many developers were there in the first place ? capcom and snk were the major guns, now there's dimps and sammy both of which are placing emphasis on their 2d fighters. SNK is still doing well with their 2d gaming, SVC Chaos and KOF 2003 were their most successful games ever in terms of revenue, from the looks of it Neo Geo Battle Coliseum and KOF XI will be big money makers for them as well. Taito has entered the game as well, plus these ppl who developed the Melty Blood arcade port. The 2d scene may be dying locally but thats probably because arcade owners refuse to spend money to keep the games up to date, has anyone seen a CVS2 machine ? Guilty Gear XX ? how about Tekken 5 ? . As long as 2d games are being produced there will always be a home for it on the console.

Also don't forget the next gen consoles will be able to emulate older titles , Nintendo revolution will allow you to download N64 and snes ROMs free off their website ... and i'm sure someone will make game emulator disks like they do for the xbox / gamecube already.......... and don't forget the PS3 is backwards compatible all the way to the PS1 ! so just keep that Xmen vs Street fighter disk safe, and you can play a 2d fighting game anyting you want .

It is not just local boy RB.

The empire arcadia people said that arcades have closed up across America.

Very few left and even fewer doing well.

2D Fighters had single handedly kept the scene alive and those have since lost their momentum. The industry just isn't viable for anyone but the hard core.

The console platform has stolen its show and that, unlike the Arcade, isn't a one trick pony.

When I went to an arcade, I would play a fighting game 8/10 times. Hardly ever would my coin be plunked into a platform, adventure, rpg, or car racing machine.

Fighting all the way.

More so, what kept my quarters plummeting down that shaft, was competition..and lots of it. Opponents drove the fighting arena.

Not so on the console.

Though the home console industry is a much larger market, you won't easily find the aggregation of good players to keep you on top of  your game. That becomes a much greater challenge. You're limited to a few friends who come over or a family member in the same house (if you are lucky)

Also, their is fierce competition for that console space from several other genres. All those games that were paid scant courtesy in the arcade come out swinging. Producing better and better titles to earn your dollar.

All those distractions make up for a crowded market place that leaves you with a ton of games and a ton of casual gamers, taking a chook in a bit of everything.

Never bothering to hunker down on one or two fighting titles to wtfpwn all comers.

That is a good thing and a bad thing all at the same time.

So while 2d street fighter will be fine for the competitive purist it won't quite cut the mustard for the casual gamer, distracted by the bright lights of newer 3d titles sporting major marketing hype and innovations.

Just look around, you won't see Samurai Shodown 5 and King of Fighters 2001 on a screen near you for miles.

but hey! We are here to FIX DAT! lol

We can take the mass of that "Casual" console gaming crowd and squeeze the competitive, old school combatants out of it and put 'em in the same room for some good brawling.

Like it used to be back in the late 80s, early 90s.

Last Blade, GGXX, Samurai Shodown, StreetFighter, etc...

Gaming forever!

The japs have it  all ...  RPG... FPS .... RTS even on the arcade platform , the secret is a network to which most of the arcades are connected to a network which saves your progress... and PC compatible hardware on the arcade machines to port the games directly to the arcade system without much hassle eg. 2.5 GHZ celeron D , radeon 9100 , 512 RAM .
trinidad is a small enough place to get a south east asia like gaming scene running... we have enough enthuasiasts .. and the skill .  We could have gaming lans showed off on TV , gayelle that worthless channel has nothing better to show ,  annual tournaments , football styled teams , expos on the players etc. it would turn gaming into a respected pastime .

how many gamers you know does sit down and watch gayelle?

lol

It may be good for moms but maybe not our demographic.

Time for a poll iwmc.

That persistent arcade network sounds kick ass though!

Definitely something that could have saved the arcade scene the world over.

The only arcade I know with Tekken 5 (great game)...is in Sando....at the top of high street...across the road from la pique plaza...is a smallish green arcade, very easy to miss so be alert.

I went there wednesday. Its very homey and only a handful of people seem to know about it. Due to La Pique "Galaxy Games" arcade which should have had Tekken 5 in the first place. I dunno why they sticking. cough*cheap*cough

As to 2D fighters....I still waiting impatiently...maybe hopelessly for the sequel to Third Strike. At the rate Capcom going it may take as long as it took SF2 to get to SF3.

How about a website begging them to hurry.... or maybe threating them???

HMMMMM.....

LOL....any ideas?
