Boot up in seconds ! gigabytes IRAM
« on: June 02, 2005, 05:35:05 PM »
Gigabyte is selling a PCI card that has 4 DDR   slots , a battery , and a SATA connector , it will be detected as a hard drive when installed, making it possible to install windows on it and boot off it ,   thanks to the battery, it will be able to stay several hours without power and not loose data . Though it will be limited to 4 gigs of storage,  thats enough for windows , drivers  etc. and some virtual RAM .  This could be the next big thing in high end / server rigs, with 3-4 of these cards and a normal hard drive , they would be able to access files at blisteringly high speeds and greatly improving performance .

oh sweet mother.

I wish this was around back in win2k days though. Boot up times was a real pain.

As it stands, the windows XP on our GL machines already boot up in a few seconds.

I rem hearing about these kinda things on TechTV like 2 yrs ago. Its nothing new and the fact that solid state HDs have not caught on yet is a direct indication that its not favoured by most. Sure its a nice idea and sure it'll help in some instances. However is boot time enough to warrant the undoubtedly high price associated with it? I think not. One may argue it'll decrease loading times on games too, sure, it might esp with games like Doom3, however u can just buy more RAM and make a logical HD from a portion of ur RAM. SO buy like 2 cheap 1GB DDR400 or 512MB and use the 1GB as the drive. simpler and cheaper.

The reason 'memory' based mass storage is not the go at the moment is cost and power
But i believe samsung plans to release 2 sizes of flash based mass storage a 2.5" disk size with 16 GB and a 1.8" disk size with 8 Gb ,of course flash is a lot slower than sd mem but then there is the advantage of cheaper costs and no battery needed when the system is powered down, there were also rumours of combos a hard disk with a couple Gigs in flash where the hd itself would put frequently accessed files on the flash portion.
did someone post that already?

Yeah they recently made that announcement. However think of its applications instead of those external drive bays with a normal ATA HD in it. I would much rather have a Flash drive as those things are proving VERY durable. Man boil it, wash it in they clothes and de thing still woking!!! plus it sporting speeds of ATA66 right now I think, so its not that bad. As time goes along it should develop and get better data rates.
