You'll need to give more specs like manufacturers names on all the hardware components u've mentioned PLUS you need to add to that. As in what Graphics card (IF any) u have and whether its PCI or AGP, do u use any other add in cards? modem, network card, sound (onboard or add in). Truth is any one of the components in ur system could cause instability even after years of working. Also what kind of environment is the system being kept in? is it prone to collecting dust quickly, overly HOT or humid? Give a lil more specs and also note the system use via task manager to determine if any particular service or app is causing the system to jump to 100% utilization. I would like to believe you've developed a driver issue as that would be easiest to solve. Also mention any new drivers, hardware or software u may have installed, all these will be helpful for us to determine what is the cause of ur grief.

1st : get Spybot search and destroy , and updated antivirus, and search your system with them, see if it helps .
2nd : check your CPU temps  , if its going above your pcs 'shut down' temps (found in bios) , this could be the cause
3th .  some hardware conflict or gay driver problem , Try going into safemode and see if you get the same problem, if not , nothing should be wrong with your hardware , and you'll probably want to re install windows/ do a system restore.
4th. Scandisk the hard drive for errors and try using a different hard drive.... if this doesn't at all, get some spare parts eg. video card, sound card , modem, and swap them one by one till the problem is fixed

if none of this works... go pelt big stone at someone's house , cussing Trinithemc while you'r at it .

pretty damn comprehensive suggestions there Trini.

Only thing I'll add is the name of the tools to use.

Antivirus: Try AVG from Grisoft (it's free and fit for purpose)
Spyware Removal tool: HijackThis and Microsoft antispyware

As for the detailed specs of the machine.

Try using belarc advisor. It's free and it will give you a nice report on your machine specs that you can share with us.

good luck.

One more thing, is your heat sink fan in a mess? covered with dust? I've seen that cause lock ups in an otherwise perfectly working machine.
