Broadband over Gas pipelines
« on: May 28, 2005, 01:15:34 PM »
Someone invented a way to transmit wireless frequencies through gas pipes at speeds up to 10 gigabits ... with many countries having homes with gas piped to them , or gaslines traveling near cities , this could be an alternative to running wire .

England will just love this.

They got gas pipelines galore to the homes.

I think it'll end up going the same route as BPL (Broadband over Power Lines)...i.e. getting to the testing phase and no further...for quite a while.

Or you could set up wi fi/ wi max hotspots along the gas pipeline route to distribute the connection,  the problem with implementing these 'last mile ' solutions like  Gas broadband and broadband over power lines is that the countries with the technology and money to do it eg. US , UK , CANADA , don't NEED to do it , they already have widepread DSL/Cable access  and Wi-fi/Wi-max /Satellite for last mile , countries like Trinidad and other 3rd world countries are the ones who need to implement it .

Best of luck persuading PowerGen, bpTT, BG and the like to follow through on it...

Whilst I am sure this must have been extensively researched before testing this concept, the idea of having an electrical line run along a gas pipeline just doesn't sit right with me... now thats not discounting hte idea of Fibre along the line instead (which is prolly the case). However in a country like this its not uncommon for some baka to unearth unintentionally a pipeline or for the pipeline to get ruptured in some other stupid fashion. Also a problem they faced with Broadband over power was the broadcast nature of it. Anyways. Daz meh 2c.
