Nintendo : revolution details
« on: May 17, 2005, 08:39:18 PM »
Nintendo seems to be focusing more on innovation and price than hardware power and versatility,  The Nintendo revolution will be backwards compatible with Gamecube disks ,  it will be able to play dvds but through an extra attachment .  Nintendo will also make all previous game titles for the N64 , Snes , NES etc. available for the Revolution console via the internet .  There will be  some form of internal storage , not a hard drive, but rather solid state memory like what a digital camera uses .
nintendo will probably be competing for a niche market   that Sony and Microsoft won't pay much attention to , like the Gamecube does now .
The   rumoured specs are 4 2.5 GHZ IBM CPU's and a dual core R500 based graphics chipset and 256-512 RAM .

Quote

- Backward compatibility: The new console plays all games from the current Nintendo GameCubeTM generation. But there's more...

- The secret weapon: The console also will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo® 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

- Easy expansion: A bay for an SD memory card will let players expand the internal flash memory.

- Two disc formats, one slot: Instead of a tray, a single, innovative, self-loading media bay will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. Owners will have the option of equipping a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content.

- The specs: The system boasts 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, wireless controllers, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi access. A worldwide network of Nintendo players can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment. Revolution's technological heart, a processing chip developed with IBM and code-named Broadway, and a graphics chip set from ATI code-named Hollywood, will deliver game experiences not previously possible.

- The stars: Introduction of a number of new franchise properties will add to the world's richest stable of stars, including Mario, Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong and Metroid.

- Wireless freedom: A number of Wi-Fi-enabled launch titles are in development that will employ Nintendo's newly announced wireless gaming service, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. A worldwide network of Nintendo players can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment.

- Freedom of design: A dynamic development architecture equally accommodates both big-budget, high-profile game masterpieces as well as indie games conceived by individual developers equipped with only a big idea.

Nintendo's All-Access Gaming philosophy covers the spectrum. The next console fits anywhere. It brings together new games and old. It gives people worldwide access through wireless Wi-Fi connections. And it opens the world of video games - to everyone. Software for the new console will even attract people who don't consider themselves players. Adults, kids, men and women around the world will have access to the most popular video game characters created by Nintendo.

quote from megagames
The revolution will also take a shot at virtual reality headgear , and wireless controllers , the entire 'revolution' is one of supposedly improved gameplay through technology more than anything else

lol @ working in hand with sprangers

I've seen that they lost the kiddie look. Good marketing move I suppose but I'll miss the form factor that screamed at the kid in my heart.

The specs aren't anything to write home about. The innovations sound encouraging but those will have to be experienced to really feel the value.

i can now conclude that nintendo is working hand in hand with sprangers in TT to ensure that the console will fit in a man jansport pocket.

rofl!
That classic man.

Nintendo is holding back a few details due to their natural paranoia that someone is gonna steal them. That's probably where the real revolution comes in.

my question exactly.

I don't envy them, having to produce a product to surpass the beastly brawn of it's competitors and bring home innovations beyond general expectation.

the others are a natural progression.

Just look at their predecessors and you would see the same pattern. Increase in ram, increase in processor speed, wash rinse repeat. Dial Up support, Broad Band support, Wireless Support. Pretty straight forward progression.

nintendo promised nothing short of a paradigm shift. A revolution.

Big words. Can they live up to it??

Shiv! Shed some light! Sneak into the back room.

Well, so far, Nintendo's not scoring a lot of points with the gamers down at E3.

Their choosing to remain somewhat secretive about their console whereas the likes of Sony and Microsoft have already dropped the bomb about the sheer uber-ness of their hardware has already scored some minus points with the fans.

What really concerns me, though, is the third-party support issue. Right now, I can't IMAGINE a system surviving without it. Then again, nothing really surprises me anymore, when it comes to Nintendo. It's like being backwards is part of their corporate strategy, or something. Cases in point?

Gameboy Advance - YES, NINTENDO. IT NEEDED A F**KING BACKLIGHT.

Nintendo Gamecube - Oh sure. While the Ps2 and the X-Box are exploring the wide world of on-line play, let's dare to be different. Let's NOT and say we did.  Online play is a fad, anyways.

N 64 - Same logic, just with FMV and cutscenes. They're just...passing fancies....yeah, that's what they are. Who needs realism anyway, huh? WE'VE GOT MARIO. Yar.

Yeesh. Sorry for the rant, folks, but Nintendo has done little to impress me so far. I was hoping Revolution would change the way Nintendo did business, but nyet. It did not. On the plus side, though, Zelda: Twilight Princess looks really, REALLY dread. This was how Zelda was SUPPOSED to look like, not bug-eyed midgets. Thank YEW, Nintendo. At least I can count on you to do at least SOMETHING right.

Agreed.

I wish it were a viable strategy for them to keep in their kiddie safe niche market and milk their awesome super stars for generations to come. The way the other players are strong arming the industry, that won't be an option.

So for their (and Mario's) sake, they better revolutionize something. lol

We already know that good if not great systems can go the way of the dodo. (Cough Sega Dreamcast Cough)

on the point of revolution, did anyone down here mess around with the drum thingy for the gamecube. Saw it in England but it looked pretty gimmicky.

What's the verdict on dat? Waste of time?

I honestly thought Nintendo might have dropped out of the hardware race...and do like Sega...make games for the other consoles...honestly, it might be the best fate for Mario & co. ...beats trying to stay in the fracas and getting your jaw busted...not to mention you brokes too... :S

Well Nintendo is a very proud company from what we know of the companies history (in particular their dealings with MS) lol

While it makes perfect sense, I don't think they'd go that route. Now that their cash cow mobile market is under serious attack, who knows. They may get desperate and give Gates the key.

My bad...I didn't mean they should drop their handheld division...cos between that and their games is where the money's at for them imo.

I just think they should drop their console line...cos it's just not cutting it for them...but you're right baego...pride will keep them in the console market more than anything else...but who knows...strange things have happened before...like Sega dropping out of the console race...one of the best decisions they ever made imo.

Would be interesting to see Mario on the X tho...hell, Luigi & Link already match the colour scheme :D

I think that nintendo has something up their sleeve. seriously, i mean the revo simply cant be that , well simplistic. i read an article that said while the ps3 is roughly 12 times the total power of the ps2 revo is  around 2 to 3 times the power of the cube. not very awe inspiring, and the thing about downloading 20 years of past tendo favs wont work either , why? no HD, the storage is a meagre 512MB internal flash, barely enough for dvd game saves, in other words you have to purchase an sd or compact flash card in addition to paying for the download i dont see anyone doing that for more than 4 or 5 of the very best games (ff KI CT m3)

what i think is that by the time the gameboy micro (that bugger lookin sweet)  launches in mid to late fall it will include mp3 playback via a small internal flash memory maybe 1 gig after all the ipod mini is smaller than the gbm and it has a couple gig of storage.

think about it a sleek lookin gameboy with a backlight standard headphone jack a gig of internal flash built in mp3 player and maybe txt reader  what do you have? a killer device with a 700 game library that looks suhweet

as for the revo its controller better the gameboy 2 otherwise its market share might not even be 10% mario and link notwithstanding

To be honest?
Nintendo should just drop out of the console market altogether and focus on where their strengths truly lie....the handheld market. Even better, they should develop games for other systems as a third party developer, which would totally ROCK, because it gives us, the Sony and the Microsoft fans, the opportunity to play these kickass games on consoles that are vastly superior to the Gamecube. And, truth be told, Nintendo's strategies with their consoles from N 64 upwards have been rather poor.

Final Fantasy Chronicles and what Nintendo did to that game, to boot, was pure asshattery in its finest.

why so many people want nintendo to just cave in and give up?

Nintendo is still a very comfortable company with 17% north american market, 22 % european market and 30% in Japan (consoles). Plus they own the handheld market.

I am not a nintendo "fan boy" but i rate nintendo because my most memorable console gaming experiences has been on  nintendo systems from my nes to my cube. think about it people it Nintendo folds a huge chunk of the gaming world will be lost and we will be left to suffer with overhyped but underwhelming titles on the other two systems....don't get me wrong I also own the other two systems but there just always seem to be something missing in many of these games, two in recent memory is Halo 2 and God of war....my complaint with halo 2 is it feels like the same game with a couple new weapons and damn we are being invaded and it feels like it's not all that serious, God of War starts out as a marvelous game but after the first couple stages it gets lost in hype. My nintendo titles on the other hand I am still playing metroid prime 1 n 2, smash bros melee, wind waker, mario kart and the best current gen game RE4.

Memorable xbox titles include fable and forza and on the ps2 i like gt4 and fighting games. Dremcast died cuz they spend millions to make and promote it but released at a bad time plus unlike microsoft and sony, sega (and nintendo for that matter) doesn't have a primary (yes primary) business to absorb losses...did you know that microsoft loss millions from the current xbox?

damn post getting too long, my point?

Nintendo should not be put to death and should stop being made fun of for being/thinking different
[/b]

don't like nintendo (rev, cube, gba, ds etc)? focus on you super powerful systems from microsoft and sony....thats why people have choices and it would be rather boring if all the choices were the same  ^_^

When nintendo releases the revo and it stuns the masses and they seriously profit from it and all you anti- nintendo people see what nintendo is really capable of i hope your minds will change. This revo though secret will creep up on the others like a silent assasin and catch everybody off guard.

Zard, FYI.

I don't think Nintendo should be put out of its misery for being different.
I think Nintendo should be put out of its misery for being damn STUPID.

By the way, I haven't seen anything in that post that shows that Nintendo did anything really different that topples over Sony and Microsoft. All I saw was some very minute points that really don't make a load of sense.

And justin, did you catch E3 two days ago?
Nintendo Revolution was the most disappointing show of the three presentations.
Not only were they vague about what the console can do, they kept secret about many of the things that PS3 and the X-Box 360 let fly to stir up their faction of gamers. Stunned? Nope. Letdown? Ah, yuuup.

The fact is, Nintendo hasn't impressed me (console-wise) with anything they came up with since the N 64.
The Super Nintendo days were just GOLD. I was a hardcore Nintendo freak back then.
Now, Nintendo makes me weep with their bone-headed backwardness.

well well, , fighting words. the big N has a worthy defender. ok  let me add this, nintendo might very well be planning something stunning, something revolutionary, only prob is they should have said nothing at all about revo at e3 that in my view would have been the better move. they should have anounced a ton of games for DS unvieled the micro with masive fanfare (and a built in mp3 player) and made some mysterious  thickly veiled statements about revo.

on the controller i think the rev controller will be some form of a handheld gaming/gamesave device, think VMU meets GBA that would be at least partially revolutionary, wait no sega did that first.

Yeah QZA anybody going against Nintendo better explain themselves i couldnt care who you were nobody has any right to discriminate Nintendo! Like any anti Nintendo freak of nature could do anything better! If their's anyone then u know what to do form a company and try rivalling Sony and Microsoft. HAHA like if! Anyway when Nintendo brings out the revo no matter what ill buy it. Im not anti Sony nor Microsoft , i own a PS2, but i wil be a Nintendo loyalist forever. The secrets when released will be like Pearl  Harbour part two. Devastaing and lethal! QZA that may be have been a good idea not even mentioning the Revo.

Stop being such a fanboy, justinkoo, and open your eyes.

Nintendo had 15 freaking years to do something revolutionary.
And yet, whatever they did, it always fell short of the competition.
Look at what happened to the N 64. Lack of third party support and the initial refusal to use CD-ROMs saw it fall flat on its face in front of the Playstation. The Gamecube. No on-line play? Despite what it's doing for Sony and Microsoft? Feh.

So, you have to excuse me.
It's not as if Nintendo won't pull a rabbit out of their hat at the show...maybe they would.
But:

1) Doing so when the PS3 and the X-Box 360 have already revealed what their systems can do is tantamount to giving away spoilers for Star Wars when everybody's seen it.

2) THIRD PARTY SUPPORT. POSSIBLY LEAVING NINTENDO.

3) We've already got scores of unhappy E3 goers who describe the Revolution as 'the biggest disappointment so far' (see G4TV...that was almost a landslide), so impressing them is going to be MUCH harder than with Sony and Microsoft.

Yeesh, justin. For somebody who's a 'Nintendo loyalist', you aren't even putting up much of an argument other than 'OMG!! NINTENDO IS GAWD!!! THOSE WHO HATE IT SUXXORR LOLOLOL!!"
Please. I've been there, done that, and know well enough to know that Nintendo is doing level CRAP right now, and have to come damn good to impress the likes of me.

Oh, and by the way, don't ever say things like, 'Well, YOU create a company and do better!'
That's just juvenile.
Find your facts that Nintendo will actually wow us over instead of spouting over like a fanboy, and then talk your talk.
