Yea, I went to an "IT camp" like that already. Thats where I learn the basics of all FPS by playing quake straight through. Well it really and truly was an IT camp, I just already knew everything that they were doing.

I haven't read all the posts so if I late with this idea forgive me, how about the prize for the competition is like a book grant or something so? or a computer or 2 for the school? I think that prizes such as these would surely outweigh the negatives. Have education be the focus, devide the catergories of gamers into different skill improving sects. As trini said, for teamwork and team morale building RTS games, for improvement of hand-eye co-ordination FSP. Another idea would be questionairres that would determine the games a student has played so u can group them accordingly. Say a student is heavy on FPS but is a loner, have him placed in a RTS team or FPS CTF things like that. Also getting the gaming history can work other ways as well. For instance student who have never played any of the Myst line of games (which is an excellent puzzle solving game) can play for a predetermined lenght of time, winner is who solves the most puzzles or reaches the furthest. There are alot of ways u can sell gaming to a parent. A child suffering from ADD, there are games out there I am sure that could be used to help (preferrably something serene, a flight sim or such). Also think about sim games, like tank/aircraft/racing sims that will allow children to get a feel for a potential career later on. Come on pplz I am sure we can make this work. I think this has to be the single GREATEST idea I have EVER seen Trini post, I think we can make it happen, any feedback on my ideas?

we have a lil camp that goes on teach the kids basics and so on and for a 2 hours before parents come they get to sweat the idea is we tell the parents that after  a day of hard work we reward them with a lil sweatage well game fun
thats simple right there
W1ntry wey to go that sounds cool so much strategies in there ...W1n T Zus - Act Of Gaming! comin to a book store near you we have to go deeper into your taughts but the parent may think we talking a pack of BS but its worth that

Actually, w1ntry, I agree with you. And most times I get really very angry when people reffering to playing game as a child's thing. WTF!? Firstly, playing game is no different from any other activity. Same points that you made, RTS, gives a VERY good sense of stragey (And I not talking about games where you basically build a big squad and wipe out the other man). And I have found playing games like BF2 could have you alot better sense of coperation than most sports can. And to be honest, its not about "just" selling these ideas to the parents, but actually fulfilling them! And another thing is if you know how to play your cards right, and have enough skill, you can make lot of money off of it. Gaming tournyes away, you can make major mulah from it, but obviously you have to have skill/talent oozeing out of you.

There is alot that can be gained from "playing games" just have to know what to play, and why your playing it.

rivalry only takes place when people put down the performance of others instead of helping them , give off arrogance etc.  Otherwise friendships  and healthy competition will take place

and then some people don't liked to be helped.

They take offense to you giving them "tips" and teaching them how to better their game.

A task they would rather do themselves.

Different strokes for different folks.

There are inter school chess tournaments, scrabble tournaments , football and cricket tournaments ,why not gaming tournaments? I would consider many of the games we regurlarly play in the internet cafe's 'constructive' as Warcraft III builds critical decision making skills  , eg.when to attack , whether to fight over a gold mine or go straight for the main base  , and resource managment  etc.    Quake and unreal build split second reflexes  and games like battlefield , Wolfenstein, raven shield and counterstrike build  leadership skills and teamwork......
Can't gatt get funding from some organisation , and organise a series of annual inter school gaming tournaments ?  It would generate interest in gaming , whereby increasing  attendance at arcades/internet cafe's , and increasing profits ... If the organisation providing funding be a game producer / hardwer manufacturer , it will also experience boosted sales .
         thoughts anyone?

lol cant remember the last time that I tried to justify my gaming to someone...i used those same reasons!
