Sony has trumpeted the movie playing features of the PSP since the unit was first announced, but until today, very little practical evidence of those features being exercised had come to light. Sony Pictures' Spider-Man 2 is slated to be included with the U.S. PSP's first million units, but that was about it -- no UMD movies have yet been released in Japan, and announcements were almost nonexistent until today.
But now, Sony Pictures has announced that it plans to release four UMD movie discs in North America on April 19, 2005. The initial batch of films will be: XXX, Hellboy, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico. Sony Pictures also plans to ship UMD movies in Japan around the same time, although specific titles are not yet known. Pricing info on the first wave of UMD movie titles is also currently unavailable.
