To Mod or not to Mod
« on: February 24, 2005, 11:19:01 AM »
I have a PS2 that I've had since Father's Day 3 years ago....it works fine, but I find that the game prices here in T&T are too dang much.  I can always go to the states once a year and pick up new titles (used is usually more practical when buying in bulk).  I even have my parents send me games for Christmas and my birthday...but that's just not enough games...

I've been considering modding my ps2 but have heard both good and bad things...the negative being that it decreases the life of the system...the positive of course being that the games are much more affordable.  I'm thinking I might just wait until the ps3 comes out, then mod my ps2, that way if it messes up, it won't matter...

Whatcha' think?
I'd believe u if you were right.

I've never heard that modding a PS2 decreases its life. Where'd you hear that?

That whole thing about shortening the life of the system is BS.  Take it from someone who owns one.  You only hear that from who don't have one.  Look for yourself.

Anyway, there are those who think a PS2 is an NES and thus give it the same treatment/punishment and complain like idiots when things go wrong like it wasn't their fault.  If you take care of your system it will last as long as you need it for.

I think some complications will arise in your case as the system has been used for quite some time.  If you are looking to mod, it's best to do it as early as possible.  Even better if you got it already modded btw.

My advice is to carry it by Nanan's and ask if they think the system could handle it first to find out.  Yes Nanan is out to make money but I have seen him turn ppl down with PS2s that have a high chance "mash-upsy".

The first step is always to get a PROPER opinion from a CREDITABLE source.

Good luck with that.

Thought so. It's like the "Super Nintendo could mash up yuh TV" rumor of this generation.

Strongy's PS2 is still going strong (laugh!) after about 3 years of being modded.

What I've heard that makes more senses is that certain modding techniques take away the console's ability to play DVD movies...and this was only in the early PS2s. Yor own might fall into that category. Just ask and see.

And yeah, I've seen the "untrustworthy" Nanan turn down mods because of old systems more than once.

I don't think its a case of mash-upsy. Most places ( Nanan's , JK etc) will not take the chance to mod an older version PS2 anymore. I think Version 4 is as low as they'll go. Osiris carried his own to mod the other day and they didn't mod his.  He ended up trading his PS2 for another.

thanks for the info....the last time I called Nanan's and read the spc number, they said they could mod it, but it would be $1000 (about what it will cost me to buy a new one in the states if I needed to).

You are right about the folks that said it would decrease the longevity of the system being folks that don't have one....it was all hearsay on their part.

From the stuff I read on the ps3 from gamespot.com, I think I really want the system when it comes out.  The only problem is that I'll be faced with the same difficulty with getting original games.  A friend emailed me the other day about giving me a contact for new games at dirt cheap prices...some guy he uses overseas in Japan.  He says he's been using the guy for years and never had a problem.  Maybe I'll follow through with that lead and see where it goes.
I'd believe u if you were right.

Pass on that guys contact info in japan!

It would really help the gamedom.

As is, we bring down games for the membership at near cost price from the states but the vat and duty to import the games into the island increases the price quite a bit.

Luckily, you can have some pretty good games for small money if you're into the "foreign used" market.

Especially yesteryears big titles.

i am against modification despite the advantages or disadvantages because if you knew the hell that programmers went through to make those games its really not fair.

originally i had my ps2 modded cause me and my cuz used to put up and buy games and would just burn and both of us have copies. but now, i realise that it saves ALOT of money, but like for games that i REAL want, and i support fully, i'll buy the original....

it's all a matter of context, as for the SNES destroy tv's thing, it was about rear screen projection TV's. Oh my cousin's 62" tele fell victim to it. But only after playing 9 hours of rainbox Six 3 a day, everyday for about 8 months. Now, when they tv displays any white or dark screens you see the phrase "Xbox LIVE, Red team won the match" ghosting in the middle. It's not very noticeable, but once you know it's there, it is very annoying.

While I detest the modding on consoles, I too have not heard of it decreasing the life of a console. Another of those foolish rumors is that cheating devices can ruin the game permanently

I was all pro modding consoles. I would say do it (like XBOX) to open up its abilities. Upload movies, rip games to load faster, upload emulators....etc etc

Until i get a game and play it, real enjoy it and gorn to watch the extras only to find no extras there. they replace the vid with a cutscene in the game. Also, them dual layer games could burn, but yuh might as well pay tru yuh nose for them

Bottom line. Want a game that WORKS go with the original. I doh mind anyone buying pirates, the prices in Trini RIDICULOUS and ah doh blame alyuh, just get a good source to mod and get games from *Cough* Jk is the BOMB *cough*

check this page (http://www.divineo.com) and look for the swap magic USA + slide card offer (19.99 us)  in the ps2 chips and development section - that is by far the easiest way to play your dvdr's.
no need to pay 1000 TT

to mod or not to mod..... if each one mod one.. what a wonderful world it would be....  if u like a game buy it...  but the prices of games in trinidad are RIIIIII DUCOLOUS... $595....  modding adds more functionality to ur console ( esp xbox ) dvd  , mpeg  , mp3 playback.. etc.  oh and emulators too.. the way they were meant to be played .. on a console .. with a tv.

as for modding damaging ur console... ive heard that story .. laughed a few times too.... some mods are not completely compatible with some consoles.. although.. they may work initially.. the points at which they connect to motherboard of the consoles  can cause probs... esp if a touch point is accessed every time the console boots and this point  was never intended to be hit with a specific current... so often. once u do your research properly.. u should have no problems..

Just get a modchip that allows upgrades and you good. However again. If you going LIVE with an XBOX dont mod the system. MS does weekly patch updates to the system online when you connect. Now people have argued that you can switch off the modchip and go online no problems with many reasons.  That USED to work when LIVE now came out. But not anymore. You get countless people on the forum with "banned from LIVE" topics.

As for PS2 ppl. You good to go. Dissable the modchip and you happy like pappy. And if you get detected you just get a message saying you need an original game to play, you dont get banned.
