Midway announces Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Publisher expands fighting franchise with new action-adventure, due in 2005; plans annual Mortal Kombat releases.

Today, Midway announced some major changes to the Mortal Kombat franchise. The first was the unveiling of the next game in the series, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. Unlike regular Mortal Kombat games, Shaolin Monks will be an action-adventure title, allowing players to explore a world beyond the arena of death. The game is currently in development for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 and is slated for a fall 2005 release.

The other big change to the Mortal Kombat series is its frequency. In a statement, Midway president David F. Zucker said a new game in the franchise would arrive each year. “Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is also our first step toward delivering something that Mortal Kombat fans have been calling for: a new game set in the Mortal Kombat universe every year," he said. "We are planning our Mortal Kombat release schedule with the expectation that we will deliver a new Mortal Kombat title annually.”

Lets hope it is more successful than Mythologies. That game sucked big time.

Not to me. I thought that game was one of the peaks of Mortal Kombat myself. Anyway, different strokes for different folks.

On topic, though, once they don't go overboard, it's fine by me. More Mortal Kombat for everyone. Niftyness!

its an awesome franchise if a bit convoluted. They could have kept the story a bit more cohesive.

However, the universe is still awesome and deserves further exploitation.

I hated that tv series but loved the movie.

Didn't get to play Mythologies, for shame...because Sub Zero is my  personal fav.

Have to get my hands on that one of these days.

i thought mythologies was good, not great but good
i really like the mk series but soon then goin to break my bank

people have to stop judging old games by today's standards. I personally despise Sub Zero as a character, but I loved MKM. The game was alot of fun, many flaws such as the "die and retry" theme of the stages, but when I kept in mind that these guys did an adventure game for the first time I grew a little more forgiving. As for releasing a new addition to the series every year. that means they will milk the same terrible engine that MKDA and MKD uses. Which is not a good thing at all! Does the author mind pointing me in the direction that he founf this news cause I have'nt seen it on any reputable sites. Maybe they intend on releasing a new game based on each popular character. From the title Shao Lin Monks, This could only be based on Kung Lao or Liu Kang.

Once Trini ppl see blood is like ''Ey that real bad!''......MK is aite to me but it getting like street fighter now.....hadda come out with a new game with slight changes, if none at all every year.

and ain't nothing wrong with that.

It is gonna be a smart move for game developers as the production cost of games is going through the roof.

Back in the day, when 5 men on a small budget could have made a game in 6 months, you could afford to do something truly radical with each iteration. A game was only 3-4mb on the SNES

Now it takes a team of 40+, with super computers and tons of money to produce a game that will eat up 3-4GB on PS2/XBOX

They had best get their money worth out of that effort and what better way than just making some small tweaks to the code, a few additions and then bam! New Game in another 6 months for very little spend.

It makes perfect sense and it's probably the best mitigating factor against the exponential increase in costs to create games.
