Lord of the Rings : battle for Middle Earth
« on: February 16, 2005, 04:53:39 PM »
A great game that even though it borrows more than one page from warcraft III's gameplay style.... it has more emphasis on large numbers of well mixed  units and defences than a powerful hero/spellcasters/ .  You have to scout out positions to build on.. and can only build in designated areas.... you don't have to worry about goldmines, as your resources come from farms/blacksmiths/ lumber mills .  It has a nice feature where your cavalry/Oliphants run over units like vehicles do in C&C generals .. though your cavalry loose HP very fast, and running through a squad of pikemen will get them killed VERY fast......
Even though most heros are weak, and their 'auras'' ( now called passive abilities)  do little to help your units in a fight , Though the wizards (gandalf/Saruman)  have an uber attack that will break an army in two , it is only available at a high level... and the wizards themselves cost as much as an entire army .   Though your units  gain experience and power as heros do , and a veteran army is more valuable than any single hero....  So keeping your units alive and upgrading them is crucial .

    i will post screenshots soon...

well i dont see any similarites between this game and warcraft.......

this game is based on large numbers, while warcraft is not......

this games heros ARE NOT NECESSARY to win... while warcraft without a hero

u normally get pwned

This game is literally impossible to micro... especially in a long mission

where ppl get there strongest units..

Also the squad leveling system is the best i have ever seen......

a squad on a high enough level  pwns... (normally these are archers)

Finally the way upgrades are u must think before u upgrade a group

notice is said group..... as you pay for an upgrade it then becomes

available for unit groups which u have to pay for again......

so in essence this game as its own unique style of play...

like the total war series meets starcraft

this game reminds me of command and conqueor generals with heavy coating of LOTR for good measure. gameplay is decent, simple and easy to get into (skirmish is addictive). pretty heavy production value, sound and graphics are awesome, but i find single player campaign is a bit weak.

EA pr lied ,  BFME has alot of units , but you never get to control ' thousands'  ,  about 700 per side is the most i'v seen...
Warcraft's units are much higher detailed..... i'm disappointed ... but the game has real nice shader FX and lighting .

i still prefer warcraft... the gameplay is repetative and after halfway through the campaign it gets very boring . Fans of LOTR  would be very offended, this game rapes the books/movie story line in order to create lots of nonsensical reasons for a battle....

trini as in kayode's post in your thread about rome total war....

no pc can really handle if the units where more detailed...

remember this game is also designed for lower end consumers.

i have seen it run on an integ

yea but they should have an option for higher detailed units.... make 2 sets of models,  low and high quality for more powerful pcs....

did you know you can put an uruk-hai berserker on top of a siege? ladder

also the ai is great

if you build alot of infantry the cpu will build more cavalry
and build more pikemen and they will build more archers etc.........
