Computers hinder ur childs education
« on: March 22, 2005, 08:38:43 AM »
I myself grew up with a computer, from my first computer an apple IIe to a mac to a pc, i've had a computer for as long as I can remember. And I would like to think I did well enough, did well in CXC, A's and my first degree. Now here are supposed experts or researchers or whatever that seem to think that a computer is a bad thing... not that I doubt them esp as these days kids will kill ppl cause they play too much GTA, but still, its not guns that kill ppl its the ppl and the gun that kills ppl. Saying computers are responsible for a decrease in productivity is a bit unfair I think. Then again its prolly americans thus they like to blame everything on someone or something else... anyways heres the original article I read:

Computers may hinder children’s education, say boffins

Back to the slate and chisel

By Paul Hales: Tuesday 22 March 2005, 07:46

PARENTS BUYING COMPUTERS for the home may be erring if they think they’ll help their children learn, boffins warned, after studying the learning behaviour of around 100,000 15-year-olds.

Thomas Fuchs and Ludger Woessmann took a look at data gathered by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) , and concluded that PCs in the home can have a negative impact on some aspects of a child’s education.

Fuchs is delivering the findings to the annual conference of the Royal Economic Society in Nottingham this week.

Fuchs will tell the gathering that, holding other family characteristics constant, \"students perform significantly worse if they have computers at home.\"

The study suggests that, \"computers at home may actually distract students from learning, both because learning with computers may not be the most efficient way of learning and because computers can be used for other aims than learning.\"

Analysis of the data gathered in 32 countries, suggests that using PCs for homework and home study could be shown to negatively impact performance in literacy, science and maths, the boffins say. µ

Actually i kanda agree with that article, a PC at home is a distraction... maybe a few years back it may not of been i.e win95,98. But in this generation it is, with games like hl2,doom3,wc3 "who the hell wanna do math" .
I have lil borthers and if my folks don't ban pc use during the school week they will be on that thing till 9pm.
Now there are the few like like homie ontop who maybe had only one game for his apple, so there was nothing else to do but homework, comming to think of it i think i might be the reason for my brothers being distracted,  giving them access to my 120+ gaming collection :P  :(

*Froggo folds his arms and thinks "what the hell, i'm a horrible big brother"

i wonder, how do you pronounce a name like  "Fuchs"?

anyway i think the objective part of that article is the first line and especially the second word, "may".

but as any sociologist can tell you, show me a statistic that says one thing and i'll show you 2 that say the opposite.
I give laertes 5 ploys for that post

Ploy ploy ploy ploy ploy

btw, is that a capital " i " or a common "L"
