This is interesting to read, so much for the dual card bashing...

I think this is fitting justice for the amount of critism that they gave Nv1dia.

and it makes total and utter sense and always had.

Voodoo proved that so many moons ago.

To diss such a natural progression is suicide.

not to mention it is pure marketing brilliance. Everyone on the planet knows that 2 is greater than 1, more = better.

Such simplicity is very difficult to defeat.

i still say SLI/dual whatever is a waste. By the time is economically feasible for "normal" people, single based solutions would be better. Its not an upgrade choice...its an entire system overhaul.

ATI has to crumble like all other serious businesses, to what consumers "perceive" to be better, regardless if it is or not.

It's more about extending the life of your video card purchase...say you grab a 6600GT for $200...1 year from now you could get another to do the SLI for prolly next to $100 and get quite the performance boost...sure beats forking out another $200 on a replacement that might perform around the same as having the SLI...

EXACTLY!!!

and early adopters can get the power of two right off the bat for the extra moola.

If they bought a 6800 GT and still weren't happy with performance at ultra high res with everything turned on....they could simply buy ANOTHER!!

Up the ante on performance.

How could you call this a waste synth???

Weren't you around for the Voodoo 2??

SLI kicked ass!!

SLI for  two 6800 gt on doom 3 out perform everything and i mean everything :P. yes they cost a fortune and yes board not avalible as yet by end of month board be ready :P. but sli wasn't really for the masses all along was for the gamers and cad people when they purchase the first initial step couple month later push it up a notch to 2 graphics cards.
why ? becuase 2 is better than 1 current benchmarks show sli gaining as much as 80% with 2 6600gt or 2 6800 gt . more fps mean higher res it can run at . higher res should us more detail to notice minute changes to play better . with screen resolution going from 1078*728  to 1600*1200 it means alot more polygon to drive and pixel shade with two 68000 gt it mean we have a total of 32 pixel pipelines :P . end result  2 is better than 1 might not be worth the cost to average people but for gamer and cad people every last fps count

The person who will benefit most from SLI isn't the guy who has the dough to burn and picks up 2 cards in one go....but rather, the less fortunate guy who can only afford one card at today's prices....and then picks up the second for half the price later down the road...there's your winner...cos he gets the same performance of the guy with 2 cards up front for less...albeit at a later date.

But dude, THATS ASSUMING you already have a dual pcie capable mobo + hotup ram + hotup cpu aka already have cash to burn.

My point is, for someone who can afford such in the FIRST PLACE...saving measly ~100us say 1 year from now is rather insignificant.

To that person he'd have to do complete upgrade to mantain the same kind of "edge".

Remember who this is target for...and take note who actually will shell out for this kind power...

In other words Nvidia marketing to the lowerend is faulty...at least until everything become drastically cheaper all round.

Bullsh1t... If I am going to upgrade around now to a system with such a high calibre of parts I may do it in parts. In fact thats how I have built up my current system. IN PARTS. I buy a top up mobo, then eventually a top up CPU etc.... so theres NO ASS-U-Me in dat. Yuh DOH have to have toppa top right away, just the BOARD.

Saving 100US is alot to most if not ALL the ppls I know, who are the ppl u know, i'd like to get to know them if 100US more is small thing. I know alot of ppl who would spend the money on their graphics CARD before other parts of their machine.

Not if he was smart and get a Mobo capable of dual PCIe 8x  in the first place, knowing that was the potential of that upgrade path.

Umm ppl in GATT???? as in GAMERS?.... no wait it must be..oh oh I know... rural area old ppl that are senile and have no electricity. This is the target of not just enthusiast dude, with the nforce4 SLI and other ppl making chipsets to support this feature I am sure the aim of Nv1dia is to make it more attractive to a wider audience.

Last I checked Nvid1a makes chipsets for @MD which is the cheaper, more practical gaming solution these days... so i'd say cheaper is not so far off...

True Nvidia has a superior product, but the situation isn't as bad as , say an FX 5800 vs a 9800 pro , or a Radeon 7000 vs a Geforce 2 GTS ,  They are *almost on equal footing with the X800 XT vs 6800 ultra .  And also remember how LOONG it takes for a manufacturers mistakes for it to be felt, ATIs success  last year is still showing through this year, and will continue to do so for the beginning of last year,   Nvidias success for the Geforce 2-3 only REALLY began to shine in when the Geforce 4 came out , and they were announced as the dominant  GPU maker  . ATI  will continue to make good money for long enough to deliver a counter offensive worthy of their legacy, and Nvidia won't mount the cash cow until ATI has had that chance .
SLI CAN make big money , seeing as the High end sector pulls in more money than the medium , an 'ultra- ultra high end' sector will still pull in big bucks  , and SLI will encourage medium enders to double up on their purchase , giving them  a guarenteed 2x performance rather than a 50 % for spending 2x the money .
