Intel goes back on its word

Originally !Ntel designed their P4 netburst architecture and Prescott [ with a 20 stage pipeline] to progessivly increase clock speed
[ Netburst is supposed to max out @10GHZ] . Now they are feeling the burn [from hot Socket 478 prescotts ] and admit that its too expensive to increase clock speeds like they have done in the past, in order to get more performance .
Initially they planned a 4GHZ P4 for mass production in this year, then they delayed them to next year [with a handful making its way to Alienware ] , then they cancelled them all together [ yields] . Although the world has been taught by them that CLOCK= GOOD , and that a 3ghz P4 ownz a 2.4 ghz A64 because it has more clock , they now have to eat salt and go the way of AMD : higher information per clock, no increase in clock .
more news : dual core CPUs do not have hyperthreading, as the dual cores do the same thing as HT [ and better] anyhow .
Dual cores are not worth it for gaming/user-ing . They only provide significantly more performance in cases where the program is tailored for them [ like HT] and naturally includes multiple threads . But even though clocks will not be increasing much , performance will be , as Intel plans to adopt new core tweaks with each new version [like amd ] .
Dual cores CPUs are the next Athlon FX and P4 EE , Xeon and Opteron . Faster YES , but not worth it outside a render farm .

Well thats all true, but there is more to it than that. Not only will the future hold dual and even multi-core processors but the speeds will drop at first.
So the first dual core processors will be running at the same if not lower than standard clocks that are currently available. You will see dual core @MD64 at 1.8GHz each perhaps higher but to maintain 96W total power consumption expect the cores to be slower than u would think.
Also Intel has torn up its roadmaps (again....) and is looking to feature a Dothan core (for those that don't know a Pentium M core is the Dothan) DESKTOP processor to fill the P4 shoes. The Pentium M's are fantastic processors that run at 30-40Watts and run as well at 2Ghz as a 3.4Ghz P4 so it made sense for Int3l to take that route. Although these cores do not possess HT and perform generally slower in gaming (something about their FPU's of some core logic) they are far superior in work per clock cycle to the P4 so expect int3l to answer with a dual core 64-bit derivative of the Pentium M next year sometime (or maybe as late as 2006).
@MD has the floor for the next 2 yrs it would seem, lets hope they don't shoot themselves in the foot again and keep ahead of the game!!! @MD all the way, but never count a giant out just cause u caught him with his pants down and ur foot up his @$$...
One more note, the P4 cause easily reach the 4GHz speed so don't count them out (under pressure) to release one... Also Int3l is really pushing performance and features vs RAW clock speed (yeah killing their own ideal), but hey @MD paid lots of money to change ppl minds so their competition is just continuing their work...

lol real hard @ Trini's avatar.
kick brass.
Yes, the mhz race has gotten long in the tooth. This is not news though. AMD has been arguing that for an eternity and they know, from experience...that the majority of consumer don't care to listen.
More = Better will always win the masses.
They conceded that and used the PR naming scheme on their chips to compete with Intel for mindshare. 2100+, 2400+, etc...
To do otherwise would have been suicide.
Lucky for us, anything 2ghz and above can handle pretty much every game on the planet.
The 3D card is where the performance really matters nowadays.
All I am really interested in as far as CPUs are concerned is price drops. lol

the Dothan cores are very effecient, but AMD can match that , eg. the athlon XP/A64 mobile chips . 45 W power consumtion for a 2GHZ XP or a 1.8 GHZ A64 . And thats still on .13nm process .
High end mobile products are the best for overclocking, my AthlonXP 2400 mobile can reach 2.5GHz stable[ish] , and 2.4GHZ rock solid stable [ passes Prime95] , Dothans and Radeon 9600 mobile are reported to have high O/Cs too .
True@ graphics being worth more than CPU to a gamer . a 2.4GHZ P4/Athlon XP 2600 + a 9800 pro/5900 ultra will play anything there is @smooth FPS , almost maxed out . They will continue to do so well into next year, and still play games good in 2006 [ albiet at lower settings ] .

okay trini but what about when they start making the games using 64 bit tech in mind? would the Amd true power hine in that arena as it should be utilising it's full capabilities? I mean there isn't much in my opinion that separates a p4 from an amd 64 right now because none of the games uses the 64 architecture, correct me if i'm wrong am here to learn too

a couple games next year are rumoured to use it, it provides a TEEEEENY bit of IQ increase [ you can't see it with the naked eye, you'll need an algorithm to see the difference ] and some speed increase . STALKER is supposed to i think , it comes in both 32 and 64 bit versions .

When MS releases XP64 and peeps start to make the move, developers will see more reason to release 64-bit versions of their games...as long as there's a market...there will be products...
