Hamachi VPN
« on: March 11, 2005, 04:33:18 PM »
came across this couple mths ago.. it's a freeware vpn client, allows you to set up a secured network over the internet, and has IM (for those on the network).

why would u want this? say u and a brethren have dsl, but u in arima, and he in diego..  u want a file.. he not home.. no prob. with hamachi up,you're browsing his shared folders and transferring as fast as ur pipe can bring it.

it's simple, and pretty cool, imho
if u don't already have a vpn client,it's worth a look

sorry,
it's http://www.hamachi.cc

it quite a bit of stuff for the security aspect  .... have a peek at http://www.hamachi.cc/security..
differnt types of encrption/protocols for different communication methods

seems tight liek a nun's a$$ cheeks ( if i could say that.. *looks around)

right now, it's up and running , with a rule on my firewall to allow traffic only from the other member of my network, and it's working just as promised
. u can even sweat games as if u were on a regular LAN ( it creates a virtual network adapter, and assigns it it's own IP )

Currently using this to play games online with another pardna who has DSL also (Arima<--->Trincity), and I mst say, it wukkin BOSS!!!!
Currently using it to play LAN games online (CoD2, Rainbow Six: Lockdown) and the ping times are fantastic at 75 ms on average.

For this application alone, I can recommend Hamachi.

yeah, I checked this out way back in the day but never made much use of it.

Think it is high time we revisited the app. Now that DSL is all the more ubiquitous amongst the membership and since Greendot dropped the ball in allowing GLs to play together on the wireless lan.

If hardware cannot save us, maybe software can.

From what I read, you could set this up on say 10 machines in GATT HQ and 10 machines in Fantasy V and play against each other in one big online LAN game.

That said, the lag would probably make it an atrocious experience, but it could be done. Maybe more practical for light, lag tolerant games like DOTA.

As an update,

Trinithereturn and I just tried it out with a "LAN" game of DOTA. Worked like a charm. Got a bit of lag but I was on the evdo, so that may be to blame. Will try it again tomorrow on DSL.

I'll definitely be taking a look at this later seeing as I deal with some of these on a regular. Although I not familiar with all the differnet encryption types whether it be in the authentication phase or latter. Based on my peruse of the encryption used, it seems relatively secure. As I investigate I might do an analysis, time will tell.

kick ass. You got DSL and dota right w1ntry?

we are gonna test again tonight.

The real beauty about this is the Port Forwarding, or rather lack thereof. No messing about with routers to be able to host games.

Great for the average gamer that would rather sweat than configure a speedstream 4200.

It holds great potential for inter-GL sweatage too.

Sadly, I have determined that the original CoD/UO will not work with Hamachi.
I think it has something to do with the type of encryption protocols in use.
