Enter the dawn of 64-bit W1ndows...
« on: December 08, 2004, 08:22:17 AM »
The following is an article about a leaked release date of Win X64:
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=20085
For those that rather not read from the link:
Quote
A REPORT on Planet AMD 64 appears to confirm our earlier reports that Windows X64 will be released to the market in March next year.

According to the site, a "critical compiler" problem means that the Itanium build will not be supported in the release candidate, which is scheduled to be available to the channel in February of next year.

Microsoft released a second RC build for 2003 SP1 including Pro x64 on the third of this month.

What's really nice is that you will be able to trade in your XP 32-bit for a 64-bit version for free! Of course this only applies to owners of legit copies of XP 32-bit...

Very nice move by MS imo.

Umm yo.. cereal, apple was FIRST to bring out a 64-bit CPU for the PC market... didn't you know that? (note I said PC market not SMP aka 1tanium market). The G5 is a 64-bit processor and has been from the start. I am not sure what OS X is but, unix can be recompiled to work with 64-bit processors and run 64-bit apps.. so I don't know if their latest release of OS X is already 64-bit or not.

how is it shaping up so far unforgiven??? give some feedback on performance or advantages... to us pplz who are less fortunate and can't afford an A64 (3500 or better) yet.

old news , i new about this since the time i built my machine... i still built it  , planning to sell it next year and move up to 64 bit heaven :D .
Micr0S0ft cannot release it until !ntel has 64 bit processors on the market, and i doubt it will be very bug free when its out... not to mention that few programs will be compiled for it till 2006 .
Don't worry people , by late 2005/early 2006 64bit will be affordable enough....

Well to be honest 1ntel already has processors with its EMT64 or 64-bit extensions fully functionaly... in the server and workstation market anyways. So its its not waiting on 1ntel alone, it also dropped 1tanium support in its most recent build. I would say usoft is making sure its comlpetely functional as an OS rather than worrying about the hardware to support it. 1ntel and MS may sleep in the same bed, but V0le has enough outside lovers to keep it warm if it ever had to move out. As it stands x86 64bit is joint between V0le, @MD and 1ntel.

Apple is  busy helping Sony and IBM make multi processors with G5 cores  . The PS3 and Xbox  2 are supposed to use mutlicore apple CPUs.

Athlon64s show alot high synthetic benchmark scores [ memory bandwidth, read/write speed ] when running W!ndows 64, and stalker allegedly gets an IQ boost from it [you need an algorithm to see a difference] .

http://www.devhardware.com/c/a/Software/At...-Bit-Edition/5/
the performance increase in older 32 bit software is less than a percent, but once programs are compiled for it we should see a healthy 10-15% difference at least .
