need help installing the ati catalyst driver 4.10
« on: November 16, 2004, 10:15:03 AM »
Ok the problem I am having is that the driver fails to initialize after installation and as a result does not run. I am using a 9600 XT all in wonder and I don't want to go through all the trouble to aquire 4.11 (ah still have dial up nah) until I am able to install 4.10 properly.

Any assistance would be appreciated

be sure to UNINSTALL your original CAT drivers , restart , then install the new ones , ATI wants you to have SP2 and all the latest microsoft updates for it to work . .NET framework especially .

The .Net framework is NOT a necessity...UNLESS you are using their new Catalyst Control Center...as opposed to the older Catalyst Control Panel.

My advice to you coledraft is to grab this lil utility from ATI --> http://www2.ati.com/drivers/cat-uninstaller.exe
It's only 300k or so. Here's the description of the tool from their website:
Quote
This tool is used to delete all ATI related files from your system. This includes ATI CATALYST software suite and any ATI Demos and/or Development tools (i.e. ATI RenderMonkey)."
Once you get out the old files, reboot and cancel off any of the windows that prompt for driver installation when you get back into windows...then, when it's finally settled down and says that the hardware is installed but might not be functioning correctly etc, run the 4.10 exe and install as usual.

I'll give it a try...but I believe that the control panel is the problem because when I try to run it an error message that reads that it failed to initialize properly is displayed.

GAhhh thas why i hated ATI especially in Xp. theres a little program called driver deleter. it also come with a program call Cab deleter (which goes into window driver cab files and searches for ati/nvidia drivers). i prefer it to the one given by Ati since it still misses up. its the best program ive used and saved me during my bleek ATI era.

Quote
It is for nVidia, ATI, Creative, Turtle Beach, SIS Graphics and 3Dfx. It will remove anything that is left by the drivers after uninstall.

if your issue is with the control panel i think youd need to unistall all ATI software  (just to sure).
run driver deleter/cab deleter
then try to an install. if this doesnt work then i guess youll have to stick to the cd drivers.

but just asking...wouldnt like extracting the ati drivers to a directory without installing it... then update driver for video card and select inf in the folder with the extracts, work?

i mean like... extract all the files into a folder and in hardware management you select update driver for the display device, and select the corresponding inf file in the folder for the driver.... would that work?

Most ATI drivers are sealed in Cab files. its very rare to be able to download an install that you can actually see the drivers. this was one of the things that pissed me off with ATI cards. you had to use the installer.

By the way Coledraft did you get a " install default VGA driver" error?

Well I had a similar problem however it was due to not installing the .NET framework. If you haven't already installed it try that out. I also do NOT have SP2, its NOT a requirement so doh worry about that. Uninstalling is not also not necessary SOMETIME, when I installed Catalyst 4.10 (and had the problems with .NET) it didn't give any trouble with the previously installed drivers. Actually my entire system gave REAL beans when I uninstalled 4.8 I had to do a system restore then install .NET and 4.10 so it seems @TI has some driver issues still. I have a 9800Pro

Ahhh...so you're using the new Catalyst Control Center then w1ntry? The one that lets you see in real time how the option affects the image quality? Nice :) I haven't installed it myself cause the Catalyst Control Panle works fine for me and I'm sticking with the theory that if it ain't broke, don't fix it...for now :) Maybe I'll catch a vaps and install it a couple weekends from now.

sorry to keep you guys hanging with the feedback but I am currently downloading the Windows SP2 before I attempt to install 4.10. You see I reinstalled windows and there were quite alot of downloads I had to do with the before I updated the windows. I downloaded the ati uninstaller utility already so when SP2 has been downloaded and installed i'll run it. btw thanks alot for all the info you guys contributed and i'll let you all know the outcome asap.
